Frank S. Wright, a World War II Marine Raider, served as a corporal for 79 years until an honorary promotion finally recognized his combat service at age 100.

He enlisted in January 1942 at 16 by using his brother's birthdate and fought in Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Guam, and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded twice.

Discharged in January 1946, Wright built a career and community life, but he long carried the rank he earned in battle.

On August 31, 2025, in Stockton, California, Commandant Gen. Eric M. Smith approved his promotion to sergeant.

“I am a Marine. Not was. Am.” Wright said.

The change honored his wartime contributions and decades of service to others.
