Dan Vardell for Lakeway

Dan Vardell for Lakeway Lakeway Comprehensive Planning member, Zoning and Planning Commissioner

04/12/2024

Last night Jennifer Fleck and We The People hosted the first candidate forum (I believe in conjunction with Gerry Ward who I saw there helping as usual). It was great to see all the candidates come together, meet the community, and talk about how their passion for Lakeway drives them to want to volunteer substantial portions of their time to preserve what we have and ensure we maintain our high standards as we grow and evolve.

There are 3 seats open and I encourage everyone to vote for the 3 candidates who have developed a history of volunteering for the City and working collaboratively to support their neighbors: Matt Sherman for Lakeway City Council, Kelly Brynteson - Lakeway City Councilmember, and Jennifer Szimanski - Lakeway City Councilmember.

I highly recommend taking advantage of one of the remaining opportunities to meet the candidates, hear them talk, and decide for yourself. The next two are both at the Lakeway Activity Center -- the first the evening of 4/16 and the second on 4/18.

Election season has returned to Lakeway and several of you have asked whether I am running again this year. I am not but I am wholeheartedly supporting Matt Sherman's candidacy. He is a fellow Zoning Commissioner, airpark, and nature enthusiast. Best part: Matt, like me, avoids all the silliness of the political infighting currently pervading Lakeway politics.

This election councilman Mastrangelo is term limited and forced to leave his seat. That means there are 3 seats available among 4 candidates:
1 - Matt Sherman - long-time community volunteer
2 - Jennifer Szimanski - incumbent
3 - Kelly Brynteson - incumbent
4 - Christopher Levy.

You have 3 votes but unfortunately fewer good options. This would be a very good year to get out and meet the candidates and hear them speak before making a decision.

Many of you have (like me!) been watching the construction in central Lakeway and wondering about the apparent lack of recent progress. This is due to a request by Water District 17 to redesign the lift station serving the area. The impact of this effort enforced a pause on development while details were worked out. The good news is we are nearing the end of the redesign and re-permitting process and work on the infrastructure should soon resume and continue at pace. While it seems likely some delay to the overall plan will occur, I expect Legend is doing everything they can to keep things as close to the original schedule as possible.

The attached picture is a modified perspective view of construction from recent drone footage (special thanks to Mr Recer for taking the time to capture this). I've tagged the development areas to give you a rough idea what you're looking at as it progresses.

Last night a large group of residents of Lakeway and our ETJ mobilized to attend a critical public hearing to ensure Travis County follows through on commitments to fund key development initiatives throughout the area (totaling $59.9M). I was proud to support these residents in supporting our claims that these projects cannot be ignored:
Project #2: Fund BeeProject #3: Fund the Travis County portion of RR620 widening projects throughout the area
Project #12: Fund road and safety improvements on Bee Creek road to, among other things, alleviate traffic issues surrounding Rough Hollow Elementary
Project #15: Pave key sub-standard roads in North Lakeway & ETJ - Pyramid & O'Reilly
Park Project: Fully fund commitments for Bee Cave Sports Complex

Early Voting Starts MONDAY! Just do it -- Don't Wait!

As we wrap up the initial month of campaign activities, I want to thank my most ardent supporter, my wife Adel (better known as Adel Vardell Photographer). Neither one of us has campaigned before, but having her help has actually made it quite fun!

If you don't already know who to vote for, I encourage you to watch one of the videos of our recent forums to judge for yourself:

There's no better way to make up your mind than to see, and hear, for yourself! I look forward to seeing everyone at the polls!
