CALL FOR ARTISTS: "Created in COVID"
While we are still experiencing the effects and ramifications of the COVID Pandemic, it is finally time to start coming back together. The Lansdowne Arts Board is proud to announce an open call to artists for an *in-person exhibition at the 2020 House* showcasing original artwork created during the Pandemic.
Among many other lessons, this experience has reminded us how much we value the arts- especially since we lost our access to so much of them during the Pandemic. Whether large or small, public or private, experiential or experimental, art makes a difference in how we live our lives. This is an opportunity to share what we created to help inspire others during this unprecedented period of shared history.
This exhibition aims to showcase work from Lansdowne-area artists of all ages created during their time spent at home during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Artists of all disciplines (visual artists, crafters, writers, choreographers, performers, composers and others) are welcome and encouraged to submit up to 5 original works (or documentation of performances, public works, etc.) created between March 13th 2020 and June 28th 2021 (when the Pennsylvania Department of Health lifted the universal mask mandate).
IMPORTANT DATES:
August 20th: All submissions due by midnight
September 6th: Notification of acceptance
September 20th-24th: All work to be delivered to the 2020 House by appointment only
October 1st: Opening reception from 7-9pm
Exhibition will also open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm
October 24th: Exhibition closes

November 1-3: Pickup of work from the 20*20 House by appointment only

"June Evening at Reservoir Park" by Catherine Coll @saintlucyseyeballs is this week's image in our weekly series of Lansdowne Scenes. "I went down to Reservoir Park the other night because I was wondering how the renovation would affect the lightning bug population," says the artist. "The newly reopened park is still the best place in Lansdowne to see them. While I was there, I captured this image while sitting on the new bench in the northwest corner."

I have no progress from previous WIPs to share, it's full on planning mode, the pictures are for attention anyway, I wanna see what YOU'RE working on.

The weather is nice and crisp, hope everyone can get outside today at some point.

So, show me what YOU'VE been working on.
I get inspired by seeing it.

General information

Lansdowne Borough is a community that has a history of supporting arts and artists in many creative fields. The reputation of Lansdowne has long been that it is a place where creative people congregate and create their own artistic opportunities. This is not only a perception held by the residents of Lansdowne, but well beyond our borders. This is evidenced by the successful Fall Arts Festival, Spring Arts and Crafts Festival, the Celebration Theater, the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, the Lansdowne Folk Club, The Lansdowne Sofa Cinema, The Beach House Concerts, weekly Artists showing at the Farmer’s Market, the upcoming Thursday Night music series, the opening of Cinema 16:9, and other grass-roots arts events that take place in the Borough. Also true is the unusually high number of professional artists that choose to make Lansdowne their home. Each of the above adds artistic vitality to our small community, makes it a “special” place to live, creates an identity for the borough, and helps to draw regional crowds to Lansdowne on a regular basis.

Products

The Arts Board works on public and community art projects - most notably at the 20*20 House gallery.

I've been MIA with my work in progress on my journal, but got going on it again this week. With 12 signatures and a nearly 5" spine, it qualifies to be a 'chunky monkey' journal! Now for the fun part, adding all the sari fabrics, pictures and interesting bits of ephemera to it so it comes alive!
This group is pushing for Art to be part of the economic recovery!

Just a reminder that the Lansdowne Writers' Center, under the auspices of the Lansdowne Arts Board, is hosting an event called "Lansdowne and Friends Read Their Favorite Poems." We would love to have you join us. Below is the announcement and a sample poem to prime the pump. --Dan Simpson -------------------- Lansdowne Reads Its Favorite Poems Do you have a poem that you love, one that has stayed with you for years? The Lansdowne Writers’ Center invites citizens and friends of Lansdowne to gather on Sunday, April 29, from 3:00 to 5:00, at the 20*20 Gallery, 20 Lansdowne Court, to read their favorite poems. If you have a favorite poem by someone other than you to share, or if you’d just like to hear the poems that have touched others, please join us for this fun event in celebration of National Poetry Month. Because we want this to be an inclusive, family-friendly event, we’re asking you to limit your reading to three minutes and refrain from poems that include obscenity, sexually explicit material, and/or violence. Please feel free to bring a couple “backup” poems, in case someone else reads a poem you had intended to read or, time permitting, participants can read a second favorite. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to (267) 767-3689 or [email protected]. Please let us know if you plan to read a poem and, if applicable, how many additional people you will be bringing with you.Refreshments will be provided. Admission is free. This event is sponsored by the Lansdowne Arts Board, an advisory group of the Lansdowne Borough Council. -------------------- Sample Poem This poem comes from Clare Hughes, who writes: "When I was in third grade, I had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Geomi, who read The Cremation of Sam Magee to us. I will always remember the sound of her voice and the cadence of the poem." The Cremation of Sam McGee Robert W. Service There are strange things done in the midnight sun By the men who moil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold; The Northern Lights have seen q***r sights, But the q***rest they ever did see Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge I cremated Sam McGee. Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows. Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows. He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell; Though he'd often say in his homely way that he'd "sooner live in hell". On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail. Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail. If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see; It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee. And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow, And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'erhead were dancing heel and toe, He turned to me, and "Cap," says he, "I'll cash in this trip, I guess; And if I do, I'm asking that you won't refuse my last request." Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no; then he says with a sort of moan: "It's the cursed cold, and it's got right hold till I'm chilled clean through to the bone. Yet 'tain't being dead -- it's my awful dread of the icy grave that pains; So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you'll cremate my last remains." A pal's last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail; And we started on at the streak of dawn; but God! he looked ghastly pale. He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day of his home in Tennessee; And before nightfall a co**se was all that was left of Sam McGee. There wasn't a breath in that land of death, and I hurried, horror-driven, With a co**se half hid that I couldn't get rid, because of a promise given; It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say: "You may tax your brawn and brains, But you promised true, and it's up to you to cremate those last remains." Now a promise made is a debt unpaid, and the trail has its own stern code. In the days to come, though my lips were dumb, in my heart how I cursed that load. In the long, long night, by the lone firelight, while the huskies, round in a ring, Howled out their woes to the homeless snows -- O God! how I loathed the thing. And every day that quiet clay seemed to heavy and heavier grow; And on I went, though the dogs were spent and the grub was getting low; The trail was bad, and I felt half mad, but I swore I would not give in; And I'd often sing to the hateful thing, and it hearkened with a grin. Till I came to the marge of Lake Lebarge, and a derelict there lay; It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice it was called the "Alice May". And I looked at it, and I thought a bit, and I looked at my frozen chum; Then "Here," said I, with a sudden cry, "is my cre-ma-tor-eum." Some planks I tore from the cabin floor, and I lit the boiler fire; Some coal I found that was lying around, and I heaped the fuel higher; The flames just soared, and the furnace roared -- such a blaze you seldom see; And I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal, and I stuffed in Sam McGee. Then I made a hike, for I didn't like to hear him sizzle so; And the heavens scowled, and the huskies howled, and the wind began to blow. It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled down my cheeks, and I don't know why; And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak went streaking down the sky. I do not know how long in the snow I wrestled with grisly fear; But the stars came out and they danced about ere again I ventured near; I was sick with dread, but I bravely said: "I'll just take a peep inside. I guess he's cooked, and it's time I looked"; . . . then the door I opened wide. And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar; And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: "Please close that door. It's fine in here, but I greatly fear you'll let in the cold and storm -- Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm." There are strange things done in the midnight sun By the men who moil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold; The Northern Lights have seen q***r sights, But the q***rest they ever did see Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge I cremated Sam McGee.
