There is a huge need in our community and throughout Michigan for more law enforcement officers to keep our streets safe.

In 2024 alone, 74% of Michigan law enforcement jurisdictions reported recruitment difficulties, and nearly half reported retention challenges.

That's why Jackson College is working to build a modern law enforcement academy to address the shortage.

I testified alongside Jackson College President Dan Phelan for state funding to get the project to the finish line.

Thank you for all your work Dr. Phelan!

It was all basketball in downtown Jackson.

The 3-on-3 Gus Macker Basketball tournament
took over the streets downtown.

Teams of all ages competed in the tournament, matched with teams with similar skill sets.

The Gus Macker Basketball Tournament is held in cities across the nation.

Organizers say it’s about more than basketball.
It’s community connection, teamwork, sportsmanship, friendship, activities for the entire family and giving back.

Partnerships with non profits and others are part of the action not on the court.

The Gus Macker Tournament began in 1974 by a group of friends in Lowell, Michigan who met for a small backyard gathering.

It takes many volunteers and groups to put on the event.

It’s so nice to see our young people playing basketball, making friends and having fun outside.

Thank you Lisa Allmendinger!

After 14 years of letting us all know what’s happening in Chelsea, Michigan, The Chelsea Update posted its final news story in April.

Founder and writer Lisa Allmendinger retired for health reasons.

We wanted to thank Lisa for her many years keeping us informed, so a thank you event was held at the Chelsea Fairgrounds.

I was honored to present a special State Tribute to Lisa for her dedication and commitment to our community.

The online news source covered local government, civic groups, schools, sports and other news important to Chelsea residents.

Founded on July 23, 2012, Lisa ended her final
update on April 5th this year with “That’s All Folks.”

The Chelsea Post will now take over as the online news source, with Lisa still contributing stories.

Lisa is such a joy and one of my favorite people. Thank you my friend.

It was the guns against the hoses on the ice.

Guns N’ Hoses, a charity hockey game featuring our firefighters and law enforcement officers.

Teams of firefighters, law enforcement, corrections officers and other first responders took to the ice to help a family in need.

Local 1306 Summit Jackson Firefighters Union organizes the event.

The battle of the badges takes place at Optimist Ice Arena where items were also raffled off including sports jerseys, to raise money.

Proceeds usually go to the general charity fund but this year they decided to help a Jackson family who lost everything in a fire.

This is always a popular community event and
for great causes.

It was called “The Never Forget Concert.”

Never forget what happened 25 years ago on 9/11.

On 9/11/2001 terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington DC and passengers overtook another terrorist hijacked plane and crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

2,977 people lost their lives-441 were first responders, police, firefighters, and medical personnel.

The concert was held at the Jackson County Fairgrounds to raise money for local first responders and military we’ve lost and the Tunnel To Towers Foundation.

Kevin Wolff, Jason Cross and Sadie Bass performed on stage.

It’s always great to be with Jan Ganzel and Tony Cruz who head the Tunnel To Towers Foundation events.

They do so much to help our military and first responders.

Thank you to everyone who attended the concert and may we Never Forget.

Helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault is what AWARE does in our community.

Over the past year AWARE provided emergency shelter to 197 survivors, 143 received legal advocacy, and 78 were helped navigating the court system.

Counseling services are a vital part of the agency’s work with 87 survivors beginning counseling services last year.

Executive Director Christi O’Neil, Deputy Director SaQuita Brown, and Services Coordinator Joanne Marr are the great team leading AWARE.

We met to talk about ongoing needs in our community.

Partnerships in the community with law enforcement, Henry Ford Hospital, LifeWays and others is so important.

AWARE is hoping to expand access to services throughout Jack County.

We all want to take care of our loved ones when they get older, making sure they’re healthy, happy and have everything they need.

The Chelsea Retirement Community has been doing that since 1906.

It is the flagship campus for Brio Living Services.
Rehabilitation, memory care, nursing, independent living and assisted living and other services are available.

I was honored to present a State Tribute to the Chelsea Retirement Community for its dedication and commitment to empowering our older adults to live with purpose, connection, and with the services they need.

An event was held to raise money for an endowment fund to expand the Chapel and Performing Arts Center.

This expansion will enhance the worship area and create space for cultural activities, concerts, art displays, educational classes and better technology for vision and hearing needs.

We are so grateful to have such wonderful retirement services in our area.

It was a great afternoon and always nice to see everyone especially my friend Howdy Holmes.

It was a smoke alarm blitz.

The goal is to make sure residents have a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector.

Michigan Prevention and the Jackson Fire Department teamed up for the smoke alarm blitz to help prevent fire injuries and fire fatalities in Jackson.

Residents who signed up for the free smoke detectors had them installed by Fire Fighters, Michigan Prevention staff, Red Cross and other volunteers.

Shane Green is a Community Risk Reduction Educator for the State of Michigan under Michigan Prevention and he stressed the importance of checking to make sure you have working smoke detectors.

It can save your life.

There should be a smoke detector in every bedroom and every level
of your house.

Make sure you press the test button every month, check the batteries yearly or sooner and replace the detectors every 10 years.

Thank you to our Jackson firefighters, Michigan Prevention and all the volunteers who helped install the smoke detectors.

It’s a reminder to all of us to make sure we have working smoke detectors in our homes.
