Supreme Court rules Trump cannot end DACA in big win for ‘Dreamer’ legal immigrants

So happy to see this news for our "Dreamers"!!!

Supreme Court with two surprising positive rulings this week --- today, saying Trump CANNOT end the DACA program. 🎉👍🏽♥️

DACA = Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration cannot carry out its plan to shut down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which has allowed nearly 800,000 young people, known as "Dreamers," to avoid deportation and remain in the U.S.

📣Important📣:

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended the eviction moratorium until June 30.

Her team is working on housing solutions and I'm so glad they are. With hundreds of evictions in Detroit looming and many many more across the state, we need to ensure a strong rental assistance program is put in place (using CARES Act funding) to help both tenants and landlords, legal assistance for those facing evictions (right to counsel pilot projects!!), and more.

My colleagues and I are developing proposals for #mileg and I am hopeful we can develop strong bipartisan solutions.

Congressional Democrats will unveil legislation Monday to install wide-ranging reforms for police departments across the country. It could face Republican opposition.

A new vision for justice includes police training on implicit biases, de-escalation and more

In this important moment of history, how do we want to be remembered? We need bold changes that can move us toward a new vision for justice. We are here to shape the future for our children — children like my Black and Asian daughters, who are ages 1 and 4.

That's why I voted in favor of Senate Bill 945, an important first step that will ensure police are trained on implicit biases, de-escalation, behavioral health and procedural justice. I am proud that my amendment to add a requirement for continuing education for law enforcement officers was adopted. We can't change someone's subconscious in one day, but we can work to change how they think about a situation and choose to react.

Remember the Revere Copper site dock collapse last November?

Today, Senator Bayer, Senator Geiss, and I introduced legislation to protect major waterways and public health. The legislation would ensure statewide risk assessments would be conducted and a public database of findings be made available regarding contaminated properties along major waterways, require inspections of commercial and industrial docks, and require notification regarding spills into our waterways.

Senate Bill 948: the state would be required to undertake a risk assessment for environmental contamination of any waterfront property that had previously been used for either industrial or commercial purposes, as well as take high-water levels and history of inspections into consideration. Properties would be classified as high, medium, or low risk.

Senate Bill 949: Would require the owner of waterfront property to submit a report of an inspection of docks and seawalls located on the property once every three years for a high-risk structure, or once every five years for a medium- or low-risk structure

Senate Bill 950: Would require EGLE to be notified within 24 hours of the detection of a total or partial collapse, dock failure, or any other release of a pollutant resulting by the property’s owner, as well as provide civil fines for failure to report such issues.

In the Great Lakes state, there should be no reason for our residents to be left in the dark about potential hazards on the waterways around them. Ensuring that we have public access to comprehensive information we need about the contaminated sites along our waterways is important given the growing concerns about our water quality, as well as rising water levels. I look forward to working with my colleagues on ushering these bills through the legislature so they can become law.

We need systemic change and will work to make it happen.

Please be safe.

Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement -- The Other America

"But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear?

It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity.

And so in a real sense our nation's summers of riots are caused by our nation's winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again.

Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention."

State Senator Jeff Irwin

I am proud to cosponsor Senate Bill 945, State Senator Jeff Irwin's legislation to require that law enforcement officers are trained on de-escalation techniques, mental illness, implicit bias, and procedural justice. Many law enforcement already have this training but it is clear that we need to ensure every single officer is trained in each of these aspects.

#mileg

You shouldn't fear for your life at the hands of police. Still, millions of Americans fear the police because of the brutality and the killing that we see.

My bill requires that basic training for police certification includes traning in implicit bias, violence de-escalation, and mental health screening.

Riverview Landfill Update:

We recently had a Zoom meeting between myself, our City Administrator Scott Church, Riverview Mayor Andy Swift, Riverview Administrator Doug Drysdale, and Landfill Director Jeff Dobek in response to the inquiries and complaints we received from our residents recently about excess odor and trash from the Riverview landfill flowing across King Rd. Overall, the meeting was extremely helpful and informative and I wanted to convey their mitigation strategies it to all of you as well. Apologies in advance if some of this isn't as scientific as it could be, but engineering and sanitation are pretty far out of my wheelhouse.

Most of the recent dumping was occurring in a landfill cell on the Southeast portion of the site (near Grange and King) which was what brought so much of it into our lines of sight. The dumping has now moved further east (behind a treeline and hill). In about 2-3 weeks they will be back on the other side of the hill and that alone should help quite a bit, but they are still taking other steps to mitigate these issues. Riverview acknowledged they have dropped the ball on some of these issues in the past, but are extremely committed to making things better for our residents in the future and have plans to do so.

The more recent issues with trash overflowing and smell came from a shift in wind from being out of the west to out of the north for a stretch of time over the last couple weeks. To help with this, they have extended fencing and installed new fencing with backstops to prevent trash getting blown our way in the future. They have hired temporary staff to clean out the areas that were affected by this on our side of town too. They have also added a new foam agent that will prevent some of the worse smells that come out of the landfill. Birds are also naturally averse to this foam so they won't be gathering in such large flocks. They have also added dozens of wells to use methane gasses that normally escape from the landfill to actually create a power source that will also prevent them from going into the air.

They have had meetings with both the State and County about these issues over the last couple weeks and did not receive any violations. However, they indicated they didn't want to be a "C" student/neighbor, they wanted to be the "A" student/neighbor and want to exceed those standards. They do continue to log and track all the calls and emails they receive, so your voices are being heard! I don't want to promise or leave anyone under the impression this will solve every issue we have, but they have committed to keeping us apprised of any additional operational changes or issues they may have and I hope that these measures they're taking pay off for our residents facing so many of the issues.

Hey Stephanie, i know this is out of your jouristiction but I heard yesterday that Skillsville, a really cool gym on Livernois in the avenue of fashion, is closing due to the feds rejecting their covid-19 assistance. Is there anyway the city or state can help? I would love to get this to the governor, but i tried sending messages and they are swamped, i have gotten no reply. It was heartbreaking to hear it. Skillsville was primarly (sp) a gymnastic center that taught all skills but they also had numerous other athletic pursuits that kids could get into. I covered Skillsville for a special project for the Michigan Chronicle. Here is my bio and website. Im gonna try to find the owners info and contact him to see if there is any chance it can reopen, since word is they have offically closed. Detroit needs more places like this, not less.
SkillsVille should be helped by the state and the city since the feds let them down
"DO NOT extend the Governor's emergency powers! Demand that she works with legislature for common sense solutions to OPEN NOW."
Michigan needs to open and get back to work. Business owners are responsible enough to make their workplace safe. Please open up rural Michigan!
Please consider advising the governor to make landscapers essential. Many elderly use our service and can't do it themselves. Tick season is here and the over growth will be a health concern. And many places will also have vermin problems. Landscaping is not just about making your lawn look pretty. It is about safety longer grass, mosquitoes get worse. How many more illnesses are we going to cause by saying landscaping is not essential? Lyme disease, zika?? What do rats carry? This is a problem. And many landscaping businesses have only one person. You can put restrictions on how many people per vehicle. Please help, most people that hire landscapers are people that can't do it themselves. And So many other States have landscaping as essential.
Why can’t PP donate their PPEs? Abortions and Pap smears are non essential surgeries! Emergency abortions are done at hospitals anyway!
