The way Michiganders interact with healthcare could look a lot different, as Senate Democrats propose a fundamental change in how the state handles the ACA.

Michigan is home to 20% of the world’s fresh surface water, and our Great Lakes are at the heart of who we are. This week, we celebrate their beauty, recognize their importance, and recommit to protecting these vital resources for future generations.

Thank you to the Michigan House of Representatives for standing up for democracy, transparency, and the fundamental system of checks and balances that protects the public interest.

No governing board should ever surrender its ability to address issues that impact students, employees, taxpayers, and the broader university community. Public institutions exist to serve the people not to shield themselves from accountability.

The First Amendment is not a suggestion. Open dialogue, public oversight, and the ability to question decisions are essential to maintaining trust in our institutions. When power becomes concentrated and insulated from scrutiny, the people lose their voice.

History has taught us that unchecked power regardless of who holds it is dangerous. Accountability is not an obstacle to progress; it is the foundation of good governance.

If we continue accepting business as usual, we should not be surprised when the same problems persist. The public deserves transparency. Students deserve advocacy. Communities deserve representation. And every public institution must be willing to answer to the people it serves.

Democracy works best when leaders welcome accountability, not when they attempt to avoid it.

Lawmakers could revisit the issue later in the year if there is momentum for a November ballot initiative.

Michigan families deserve affordable, reliable childcare.

I’m proud to see the Michigan Senate pass legislation to make childcare more affordable by expanding and codifying the Tri-Share program, which splits childcare costs between employers, the state, and families. The package also supports childcare providers by tying reimbursement rates to inflation and reducing unnecessary barriers to opening and operating childcare centers.

This is a meaningful step toward helping working families, strengthening our workforce, and ensuring children have access to quality care. Now the legislation moves to the House for consideration.

Today was a meaningful day of reflection and gratitude as we honored the brave men and women who fought, served, and made the ultimate sacrifice in protection of our freedoms. I was truly honored to join the Dearborn community for its annual parade and to stand together in remembrance of those whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire our nation. 🇺🇸
