The end of Daylight Saving Time doesn't mean the end of road construction. As it becomes darker earlier, extra caution is required when driving through a work zone. Workers, signs, pavement markings and equipment are more challenging for drivers to recognize in the dark. Slowing down and being alert can save your life and the life of a road worker.

Work Zone Safety message featuring Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

β€œThe next time you're on the road and approach a construction site, put yourself in the shoes of those people in orange vests and hard hats," the governor said. "They are real people - fathers, mothers, perhaps your daughter's soccer coach, a volunteer in your son's classroom. They want to go home to their families tonight just as we all do."

Work Zone Safety

Don't be "that person" who drives through the wrong section of a work zone. Obey all signs and merge when directed. Not only does this risk the lives of our road workers, but it can cause vehicle damage.

MDOT asks drivers to slow down to end road fatalities

β€œWe had all of our signs put up you know, slow down, construction ahead, cones. I was dressed in bright orange with a big stop sign,” said McCarty. The next thing he remembers is waking up in a hospital with 28 broken bones and a collapsed lung.

β€œPay attention to the road. Pay attention to construction zones. We put our lives on the line working close to traffic like that and we need people to pay attention to where we are as well,”

In late 2018, industry leaders and the Michigan Department of Transportation teamed up to establish the Work Zone Safety Task Force. Aimed at improving work zone safety and reducing the number of injuries and deaths across the state, the task force represents a key objective in providing safer work zones for all stakeholders – from influencing driver compliance to balancing mobility and safety.

We are asking for your voice. Help us continue to change the safety culture of our work zones by taking the survey to help tell us how we’ve done in the past year.

By taking about 10 minutes to fill out the survey at the link below, you will help the Work Zone Safety Task Force & Action Team 6 continue to change the culture of work zone safety within our industry.

Temporary rumble strips in work zones reduce crashes and alert road users to upcoming lane closures, detours, or other road changes. The sound and vibration from rumble strips increase awareness for inattentive and fatigued drivers and can lead to driver behavior changes like speed reduction, braking, and compliance with warning signals/signs.

On Monday, Sept. 21, at 3pm, a Macomb County Department of Roads worker was killed in a hit-and-run on EB I-94 near Nine Mi Rd in St. Clair Shores. Anyone with information about the incident should call 313-237-2450. Work zone safety is everyone's responsibility - ensuring every road worker makes it home after every shift. Our hearts go out to the family and the Macomb County Department of Roads for their loss.

Sept 2 – September is Work Zone Safety Innovation Month
Today we are talking about Halo Lights!
Halo lights attach to hardhats & provide 360 degree illumination of workers, increasing their safety and yours during night work. A road worker that is visible is less likely to be struck in a work zone.

ODOT pleads with public after 12th work zone crash since February

Ohio Department of Transportation shared photos from their most recent work zone crash. Work zone safety is an important and serious matter. The hardworking people that build and repair our roads and bridges deserve your undivided attention. That goes for Michigan, too. We don't want to see more work zone crashes ANYWHERE. #DriveSafe #PayAttention #FocusOnTheRoad

Staff at the Ohio Department of Transportation took to Facebook on Wednesday, after a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a moving ODOT truck that was towing an active lane change sign on US 30 west.

A Driveway Assistance Device (DAD) safely alerts motorists to the direction of traffic flow in one lane, alternating work zones. DADs are placed within the work zone near a residential driveway so that motorists can easily join or follow traffic - without guessing which way to turn. It improves traffic flow without compromising safety. Always pay attention to DAD because DAD knows what is safest in a work zone! #WorkZoneWednesday #TZD #DADKnowsBest

Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) display traffic information in a work zone. Messages can include delay times, stopped traffic warning, ramp/lane closures and alternate route info. Signs are an important part of a safe work zone. Do YOUR part and follow the guidelines provided by these signs to make your navigation of a work zone as safe as possible for yourself and for workers. #WorkZoneWednesday #TZD #SafeSigns #TheMoreYouKnow
