Bruised zucchini and unsightly watermelon might sound like farming waste, but C'Mon Betty founder Caitlin Burr turns them into small-batch relish.

Caitlin tapped into guidance from the MEDC-supported Michigan SBDC and Ann Arbor SPARK. Today, she partners directly with Michigan farmers to rescue surplus and cosmetically imperfect crops before they go to waste.

What started as a single festival became a community tradition, growing year after year thanks to community fundraising matched by $75K in Public Spaces Community Places grants.

Superior Coffee Roasting Company has been a Sault Ste. Marie staple since Ron Kurnik opened it in 2012. Along the way, we've been proud to back the business: through pandemic relief grants, a small business pitch competition win and most recently, a Small Business Support Hub grant funding a battery backup system that's created a safer work environment and helped prevent production losses in the roastery.

That's what MEDC support looks like: showing up for local businesses, year after year, so they can keep doing what they love.

Pete Coratti studied the culinary art of Neapolitan pizza in Italy before returning home to bring that knowledge and expertise back to Michigan. He envisioned converting an empty call center in downtown Howell into a destination diners gather in and enjoy authentic wood-fired pies.

An MEDC Match on Main grant helped Pete purchase kitchen equipment, specialized ovens and interior fixtures for the space. This investment not only turned a vacant building into a local favorite, but it gave Pete the foundation to expand into new locations in Ann Arbor and Lansing.

In downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Lynde and Brent Blair set out to restore the historic Del-Mar building, honoring its roots while creating space for future residents and visitors to enjoy.

Over the years, the 1950s property had fallen into disrepair, but with support from an MEDC Revitalization and Placemaking grant and a Small Business Support Hub grant, the Blair family gave it new life.

Today, the upstairs apartments are fully leased, and the main-floor restaurant welcomes guests from far and wide.
