Working to Protect Affordable Access to Mackinac Island...

Lansing - Today we finalized an amazing feat amidst the divided government - Senate Bill 304 was signed into law having received more than the required 2/3 majority in both the Senate and the House, proving that by working together, we can accomplish great things.

This bill strengthens oversight of the prices people are being charged to use ferries to access Mackinac Island. We have seen prices rise dramatically since a single company secured ownership of all of the ferries and all of the docks on the island. I am a strongly pro-business person, but competition is essential, and in the absence of competition, then a monopoly must exist within a strong regulatory framework when it controls something of enormous public value, like access to an entire part of our state.

Today was a great win for the economies of northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula, our residents, workers and vistors. Hopefully this will help make it more affordable for everyone to get to the island, more than 80% of which is a state park owned by the taxpayers of Michigan.

Thank you to everyone who joined hands to make this law a reality!
