Ran into a senior with a “Support Our Seniors” sign this afternoon in the parking lot at the Eastern Michigan State Fair. I thanked her for supporting the millage, and she replied “Of course! I couldn’t live without the (Imlay City) Senior Center. I’m there almost every day.”

As Lapeer County’s population continues to age during the coming years, access to senior programs will be more important than ever. Thank you to everyone who is voting “Yes!” for our seniors, yes for our community.

QOTD: Okay, I'm good with trying to help seniors age in their homes. But why does the Senior Program need to increase the millage rate to do that?

ANSWER: There are several reasons the Senior Program needs to increase funding.

First, ADDITIONAL CNAs AND OTHER STAFF RESOURCES ARE REQUIRED TO MEET THE GROWING NUMBER OF SENIORS REQUESTING ASSISTANCE. The Baby Boomers have impacted Michigan's population for almost eight decades. From their early years to the present time, decision making and services throughout the state have reflected this "population bulge." From education, to employment, to healthcare and housing, and now to the need for elder care. In Lapeer County, senior citizens now make up 30% of our population. That percentage is projected to keep increasing for another 20 years. As this generation enters its final decades, the challenges of helping seniors remain in their own homes increase.

Secondly, THE INCREASED COST OF FUEL REQUIRES ADDITIONAL FUNDING. Many of the services provided are home-based. This means Senior Program staff travel many miles throughout the county to deliver care, assistance and meals.

Thirdly, THE INCREASED COST OF FOOD REQUIRES ADDITIONAL FUNDING. We are all struggling with the increased cost of food. We see it in our grocery cart, and in when we go to a restaurant. The Senior Program will serve around 100,000 meals to seniors citizens in the coming year between the home-delivered and congregate meal programs.

Vote YES on the Lapeer Senior Citizen Millage!

Every Michigan county has some type of Senior Millage except Alpena County. Some have more than one type of millage dedicated to senior citizens. (ie Meals, Transportation, Senior Center, etc.) Lapeer County's current Senior Millage rate is in the bottom third of all Michigan Counties, where we'll remain even with the slight increase in millage.

What can we expect to see with passage of the millage? A Case Worker to help seniors meet the goal of aging in their own homes instead of facilities. More CNAs to provide direct assistance for personal care and respite to our most vulnerable seniors. Expanded meal voucher programs for seniors who live more than 10 miles from a senior center. More activity options for active seniors looking for enrichment and fun. Continuation of the recently expanded chore program to help keep seniors safe in their homes. Continuation/expansion of the home-delivered meal program for our homebound seniors.

Lapeer County's senior population has grown from 21% of our citizens to 30% of our citizens. It's only logical that the Senior Program will need to grow to provide additional support to this grownng demographic.

QoTD: Can the DDA capture be taken off the millage?

Answer: No, the DDA capture can't be taken off the millage.

State law gives DDAs (Downtown Development Authorities) the option to capture (get) some of their funding from local millages. Only two county DDAs chose to capture from the Senior Citizen Millage, City of Lapeer and Imlay City. The Senior Programs Director asked both DDAs not to capture from the senior millage. County Commissioners asked both DDAs not to capture from the senior millage. Both DDAs said they were still going to capture.

The senior millage will raise approximately $1.9 million dollars in revenue a year. The two DDAs together will get a total of approximately $6K to $8K a year from their capture.

How to change this for the future?

1.Public pressure on the DDAs. (Go to meetings, make phone calls, write letters/emails - Facebook comments won't work.)

2. Call, email or write your representatives in Lansing and tell them you want the law changed to prevent DDAs from taking local millage dollars.
