When we discuss community at Nest, it is not only about inviting the community into the shelter; as an organization, we regularly volunteer throughout our community as well. Last night, a few of our volunteers, Marcus, Theresa, and our Assistant Director, Janelle, gave back to the community by volunteering at the concessions stand at La Porte's Art in the Park.

When money gets tight, food is one of the first things families tend to cut, because you can stretch groceries in a way you can't stretch rent. That's how a hard summer can quietly turn into a housing crisis. In today's blog post, we talk about children and the connection between hunger and unhoused, as well as share local resources to keep families fed.

In addition, La Porte County already has free summer meals for any kid 18 and under. No paperwork, no registration. To find a site near you, text "Summer Meals" to 914-342-7744 or visit fns.usda.gov/summer/sitefinder
