Meet Monica Gonzalez, MASM, Director of Admissions & Gerontologist at Nevada Senior Services.

For Monica, a career in gerontology was inspired by the close relationship she shared with her grandparents and by a desire to help older adults and families navigate aging with dignity, support and confidence.

In her role at NSS, Monica often serves as a bridge between families and the complex systems surrounding senior care, helping caregivers understand available resources, funding options and services when the path forward feels overwhelming.

“The most rewarding part is seeing the relief in a caregiver’s eyes when they realize they aren’t alone. Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia is an incredible act of love, but it can be deeply isolating and exhausting.”

One thing Monica wishes more families knew? You don’t have to navigate aging alone. Through programs like Adult Day ReCreation, caregiver respite, funding guidance and community resource navigation, Nevada Senior Services is here to help families find a path forward.

Outside of work, Monica enjoys painting, tending to her indoor garden, spending time with her fiancé, Keith, and keeping up with her three kittens.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day.

For people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia — and for the families who care for them — the right support can make an enormous difference.

Dementia-capable care means looking beyond a diagnosis to understand the whole person: their abilities, preferences, routines, relationships and goals.

It also means recognizing that caregivers need information, resources and support of their own.

Today, we recognize the individuals, families, caregivers and professionals navigating dementia every day & recommit ourselves to building communities where they can live with dignity, connection and support.

Creativity doesn’t have an age limit.

At Nevada Senior Services, art is one of the many ways participants can express themselves, try something new, connect with others and simply enjoy the process of creating.

We love seeing the personalities, ideas and stories that come through in the work created at our Adult Day ReCreation centers.

Christolyn Higginbotham was 82 when she completed this piece. She always loved to have her hair done and clothes just right. She always came to the Center wearing a smile on her face. Christolyn was always color coordinated, which can be seen through her art and beautiful style.

From direct care and social services to healthcare, transportation, administration, advocacy, and everything in between, this work takes compassion, patience, skill, and commitment.

We were back out in the community last month - did you catch us at the Project REACH Senior Expo, powered by NV Energy, at the Rio Convention Center?

The event brought together older adults and community organizations to connect people with practical resources - including assistance with utility costs and other supports that can help make day-to-day life a little more manageable.

It was a great opportunity to help attendees learn more about the programs, services, and resources available to older adults and family caregivers across Southern Nevada.
