Desert Wetlands Conservancy

Desert Wetlands Conservancy The Desert Wetlands Conservancy intends to influence policy, create partnerships and initiate activities in advocacy for the Las Vegas Valley watershed, including Clark County Wetlands Park.

http://www.desertwetlands.org Members of the Desert Wetlands Conservancy (formerly Friends of the Desert Wetlands Park) have been active for the past two decades in promoting and supporting the preservation and restoration of the wetlands in the Las Vegas Wash. Historically, the wetlands covered more than 2,000 acres in the lower wash but by the late 1970s only 200 or so acres remained. The Desert Wetlands Conservancy, working with Clark County and several federal agencies, was involved with the creation of the Desert Wetlands Park and has supported its operations and projects. In 2008 the mission was expanded to include the entire Las Vegas Valley watershed. Major Goals in the current Strategic Plan are: Goal 1: Advocate for actions to protect and restore the Las Vegas Valley watershed and Wetlands Park, and restore them to a fully functioning ecosystem. Goal 2: Create and maintain an effective organization. Goal 3: Provide public recognition of the critical importance of a healthy, fully functional watershed through outreach and education to the community. Goal 4: Create cooperative partnerships to advance the organization's mission. Desert Wetlands Park website: http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/parks Desert Wetlands Conservancy P.O. A sample of the many "Thank You" notes that Desert Wetlands Conservancy has received from CCSD (Clark County School District) students. DWC has raised grant funding to bus 8,000-9,000 CCSD students to Clark County Wetlands Park for educational field trips over the past few years. We hope that reaching out to young people in this way will contribute to their development as life-long stewards of the wetlands, & the environment.

What’s going on at the Big Bridge in the Nature Preserve?

Bureau of Reclamation crews are doing weir maintenance and bank stabilization with the goal of increasing the flow capacity in the Las Vegas Wash. They have removed a lot of vegetation and will later be adding rip rap (boulders) to help with the stabilization.

Wetlands Park birds love all the goodies the maintenance has churned up in the wash and can be seen in abundance right now from the bridge. Bring your binoculars if you plan on visiting! This project started at the beginning of January and will take about a month to complete.
