LVVEco : Las Vegas Valley Ecosystem

LVVEco : Las Vegas Valley Ecosystem Las Vegas Valley Ecosystem. The use of the hashtag to record data on investigation or unusual sightings for follow-up. This is an informal survey. Peace.

I'm trying an informal investigative experiment to see if more data result in more clarity. After almost 60 years of living in las Vegas, I've noticed a change in the eco system. Our own house was usually dry outside with blow sand all around. The front yard was sicker burr grass and black widow spiders were not uncommon. Now the lawn is Bermuda and I think a type of shade & drought tolerant blue

grass (where there are no pots with other plants). I haven't seen a black widow in years (although I've encountered their webs in the senior community garden in Vegas Heights). All we have are long legged, thin bodied bug catching spiders. (Sorry for being so long winded.) As you may know from earlier posts, last year, for the first time ever, we had a fruit rat eat our pomegranates and strip our lemons. I caught the rat and one mouse at a loss of half our lemons. Over the past year, I've heard stories of birds in the suburbs eating whole plants as they started to grow. We've had a puzzle with our power going out that the lineman thinks is linked with a small flock of pigeons in the neighborhood. To track all this, I've begun to use the hash tag, , for las Vegas valley ecology (or ecosystem). When i see a flock of pigeons in the neighborhood, for example, i make note of the time, place, conditions, animal, food, or predator and post it to Facebook or Google plus with the tag. There are not much data yet but perhaps by next year there will be pockets of information that can be searched for answers.

After some shocking discoveries a few years back, Maine has led the charge in banning the use of sewage-based fertilizers, which have been found to contaminate farmlands with PFAS. Getting national policies on the books, however, may prove much harder.

Isn’t it glorious? It’s fungal hyphae on a bamboo stick about four inches below the surface of a community garden bed we’re cleaning up. Nothing quite enraptures me like fungus in the garden! (It’s so hard to grow here in the desert. But its benefits-- Wow! Imagine soil with an aspiration for the limit of the sky!) That’s all I’ve got to say. Thank you for listening to my emotional outburst.
