Sean McGrath Fund

Sean McGrath Fund Memorial charity for musician Sean McGrath (Saves The Day, Mouthpiece, Hands Tied), under the auspices of the Princeton Area Community Foundation.

We raise money and give grants to health and humanitarian causes locally, nationally, and globally. The Sean McGrath Fund was created in memory of the late musician (Saves The Day, Mouthpiece, Hands Tied), whose two-year battle with cancer ended in 2004. Through the Princeton Area Community Foundation, our Fund's mission is to financially assist a wide variety of causes reflecting Sean's life, relating to music, compassion, and health issues including cancer.

Sean would have turned 44 this week, so as is our tradition, we’re giving away some money in celebration!

In this grant cycle we're revisiting a previous recipient, funding two projects at public schools in Trenton through the wonderful educational charity DonorsChoose, purchasing a color printer for an elementary classroom and cleats for a high school soccer team (links to both projects can be found in the comments section below).

Our other grant goes to a first-time recipient, the Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia / Save the Abandoned Chimps (through the Humane Society International), which provides food and care to an island of chimps who were subjected to years of lab experiments before being abandoned during the Liberian civil war. We first learned about them through a fascinating article in the Washington Post, which you can also find in the comments section.

We extend our very sincere thanks for your support of the Sean McGrath Fund at Princeton Area Community Foundation, allowing us to honor Sean’s memory through philanthropy here at home and across the world.

In (belated) observance of Sean's birthday in late January, we're happy to announce a new three-pack of $500 grants!

- We're making another donation to our old friends at PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society), which we've earmarked for contracting specialty veterinary dentistry services to address a congenital defect they've discovered impacting an increasing number of local cats.

- Our trusted advisers at Princeton Area Community Foundation advised us of a gymnasium construction project at Hamilton's Nottingham High School (New Jersey), to which we are pleased to contribute.

- And last but far from least is our first time grant to Fair Elections Center, to help protect and expand voting rights for ALL citizens (because who can possibly disagree with that?!).

We thank all three groups for their excellent work, and we thank you for your ongoing support, which allows us to continue honoring Sean's memory through philanthropy!

Princeton Area Community Foundation Named One of the Top Ten Community Foundations in the United States

Congratulations to all of our friends at the Princeton Area Community Foundation on being named one of the ten best in their field nationwide!

The Sean McGrath Fund is incredibly fortunate to have benefited from their infrastructure, management, and advice over the past fourteen years. We literally couldn't exist without them.

Please join us in giving them a big hand (and a thumbs up or a heart while you're at it)!

We are proud to be named among the Top 10 Community Foundations in the United States! Charity Navigator, the nation's largest independent charity evaluator, named us one of “America's 10 Best Community Foundations.” The Community Foundations named to the list “are empowering donors, large and ...

Monday was the 14th anniversary of Sean's passing, so as has become our tradition, the Sean McGrath Fund at Princeton Area Community Foundation has made a new round of $500 grants to three of our previous recipients:

Gilda's Club NYC, where Sean and his family were clients during his illness (and after his loss),

Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, who help music makers with imperiled health every day, and

DonorsChoose.org, where we have completed the funding of two local classroom projects: tote bags filled with learning materials for summer school students in Camden, NJ and portable air conditioning for an antiquated school building in Bronx, NY.

We are thrilled to offer our continuing support to these three amazing organizations in Sean's name and spirit. Thank you all for your continuing support: we couldn't do it without you!

Our grant announcements are usually happy occasions, but this one is steeped in sorrow and solidarity. We offer our wholehearted and full-throated support to Everytown for Gun Safety, and we hope you will also provide them whatever assistance and fellowship you're able to offer.

It's grantmaking time again!!

We're returning to the well with both of these grants.

We first funded Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County in 2011 to help them finish their brand new game room, and they've continued to expand and improve in the years since.

They now operate two club houses, in Trenton and Lawrence, plus programs in six public schools throughout Mercer County.

Over the past few years, the number of Boys & Girls Club senior class members who graduate from high school has risen to 99 percent, and the number going on to college or technical school is greater than 80 percent.

With over 40% of Trenton youths failing to reach high school graduation, the Boys & Girls Club is focused on increasing the number of members who advance to the next grade level and graduate from high school.

Trenton Area Soup Kitchen was also one of our beneficiaries in 2011, and has likewise seen increased need for their services, which include serving meals at six separate sites in Trenton and neighboring towns, as well as providing ancillary life enhancing services like adult tutoring, computer skills, arts programs, holiday celebrations, and social programming for their clients.

We're so pleased to help both groups pursue their missions in recognition of what would have been Sean's birthday tomorrow!

Great to see Nicholas Kristof and The New York Times shine a little light on one of our past grant recipients!

Congratulations to Sasha and everyone at SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) for the shout out.

We encourage you to follow them here for future updates on their amazing work!

"Sasha Kramer works in Haiti to address two fundamental problems: a lack of toilets and declining soil fertility. Her organization, SOIL, charges customers a few dollars a month to provide and service composting toilets that turn human waste into safe agricultural fertilizer. The cost is one-third of what a sewage system would cost to operate."

We're thrilled to announce the recipients of our 39th and 40th grants, two amazing groups doing vital refugee relief around the world: the Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN) at National Nurses United, and Carry The Future!

We hope you'll follow them and support their work, and most of all we THANK YOU for helping us reach the milestone of 40 grants totaling $40,000.

Stay tuned later this month for details on our next round of grants, in honor of what would have been Sean's 42nd birthday on January 27.
