December 7 is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Join as we honor and remember the 2,403 servicemembers and 68 civilians who were killed, and the 1,178 who were injured during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The attack sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft. Thank you to all our servicemembers who tirelessly work to preserve our safety and security.

in 1992, the U.S. led the United Task Force (UNITAF), a United Nations-sanctioned multinational force of 24 countries in response to Somalia’s humanitarian disaster.

Code-named by the U.S. as "Operation Restore Hope," UNITAF deployed approximately 37,000 troops, of which 26,000 were from the U.S. and occupied roughly 40% of the country. After the operation was deemed a success, UNITAF was recalled May 4, 1993. (U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate Master Chief Petty Officer Terry C. Mitchell)

At the POW/MIA Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Veterans Outreach Coordinator Chuck Robbins, left, presented three New Jersey State Medals posthumously to Jan Buttler, the sister of United States Air Force Major Ronald M. Mayerick at the Geroge P. Vanderveer American Legion Post 129 in Toms River, Dec. 2. Maj. Mayerick was awarded the N.J. Distinguished Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, the N.J. POW-MIA Medal, and the N.J. Vietnam Service Medal.

Mayerick, of Edison, served with the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing as a First Lieutenant. On Thanksgiving Day in 1967, Mayerick and another crewmember, Maj. Brendan P. Foley departed Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on a night-time weather reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam in a RF-4C Phantom II. After losing radio contact and failing to return to the base as scheduled, both were reported missing in action and remain unaccounted for. Following the incident, Mayerick was promoted to Major, and Foley to Colonel.

The POW/MIA Christmas Tree was decorated with bows that resemble all of the missing New Jersey servicemembers from World War II to the Global War on Terrorism. Forty of the bows are in remembrance of those missing in Vietnam. (Courtesy photo)

in 1941, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was established under Administrative Order 9 and the inaugural national commander was Maj. Gen. John F. Curry (pictured first). It's the Official Civilian Auxiliary of the United States Air Force seven years after its inception.

But its origin dates back to 1936, when New Jersey Director of Aeronautics and World War I aviator Gill Robb Wilson, returned from Germany convinced of impending war. Wilson envisioned mobilizing America’s civilian aviators for national defense, which was a universally shared idea.

To this day, CAP operates the world’s largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, training, and education. (1st photo from U.S. Air Force; 2nd photo from Northeast Region Civil Air Patrol)

As the winter weather arrives, so does the extremely dangerous road conditions. In 2021, NHTSA estimates that there were 121,156 police-reported crashes in snowy conditions. Of those, 395 were fatal crashes and more than 22,000 crash-related injuries.

Your safety matters. Increase your following distance for vehicles ahead of you and wear a seat belt – they save lives. (photo by NHTSA)
