The Iran war has forced the U.S. to abandon many of its Middle East bases—that’s why the USS Lincoln couldn’t be resupplied—and it has little prospect of reclaiming them now that Iran has been emboldened to attack the troops there. MS NOW national security analyst Barry R. McCaffrey, a retired Army general, posted Saturday: “In my judgement, the US Armed Forces have probably permanently lost access to 15 Persian Gulf bases. Iran now poised to control access [to] the Gulf States. US will have to negotiate new access in western Saudi Arabia, Israel, southern Europe.”—Heather Cox Richardson

Vote for ROBERT JOHNS JR FOR WARD 6. He wants the citizens’ Audience Participation moved back to the beginning of the City Council meeting. He cares what we have to say. Incumbent Robert Weger voted to banish it to the end of the meeting. Vote him OUT.

Why ROBERT WEGER should be voted out of his Ward 6 Council seat

***He is out of touch with reality – during the city council candidate forum on Aug 20 he pronounced Lawton’s homeless problem solved. He believes that because a coalition of nonprofits were able to alleviate the Tent City crisis, that there are no other homeless people in Lawton, and never will be again. I shudder to think how he will vote on future homeless issues.

***He doesn’t pay attention to constituent emails – I wrote to him on Jan. 4, 2026 to ask about a city ordinance that seemed to be in violation of the First Amendment. He emailed Tim Wilson, deputy city attorney; John Ratliff, city manager; Jari Askins, acting city attorney and misidentified me as Cindy Edgar and “I don’t recall her being an attorney.” My NAME was on my email. I wrote back, “One doesn’t need to be an attorney to know what’s in the United States Constitution.”

***He has little interest in a constituent’s concerns if they do not reflect his “Christianity” and political views. I emailed him about a request I made in front of the City Council on May 13, 2025 that our city law enforcement not participate in ICE actions that would tear apart families of hard-working immigrants in our neighborhoods. He emailed Mayor Booker, John Ratliff and Timothy Wilson and said, ‘I am not responding to this citizen…it is seeking a following and there is no support or sympathy here on my behalf. I am 100% about following the Law, if someone is here illegal, you will leave or be caught and we will show you where the border is.” (Note: I’m appalled that someone who is a Christian pastor has so little compassion.)

***He either does not respond to constituents or responds inappropriately. I wrote several emails and letters over the last year and a half to Weger and other city officials to get an erosion problem at Hunter Hills Park fixed by replacing the soil and reseeding. The problem was caused by city vehicles when the new playground equipment was installed, and gets worse with each downpour. Never once did I get a response until Weger saw me at a public event and I brought it up again. Since it’s election time I figured he had a vested interest in making sure the problem was taken care of. However, he wrote me back and said that the city was going to put in a PARKING LOT there instead. Which is not needed. And would be right behind my house, instead of the nice open space that’s been there for fifty years. (There are many reasons why the parking lot is not needed, including that it’s a more expensive and wasteful fix.) I don’t know why he thought I’d be happy with that. He’s clueless and disinterested, which is part of the problem with the current city leadership. VOTE HIM OUT.

ROBERT JOHNS JR. has some good ideas, if you listened to him at the candidate forum. He also doesn’t sound like he’d kiss up to the mayor or city manager. If you don’t like either candidate, write-in Count Binface, because I’d rather vote for a trash can than Dr. Weger for Ward 6

This is the letter I sent last week to Sens. Lankford and Armstrong, Rep. Cole and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Please, write to your congress critters and others to stop this desecration.

SAVE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK FROM THE BORDER WALL
If you believe in a Creator – and by all accounts you do – surely you believe we are to be stewards of Creation.

What’s happening in Big Bend National Park, Texas is a violation of that stewardship. God created it, and men with vision protected it, but men without souls and ethics are destroying it.

Using the excuse of securing our borders, heavy equipment is scouring this arid land and bulldozing trees with nesting birds in the riparian area along the Rio Grande River. Though Markwayne Mullin and DHS/CBP are not sharing the true plans for this area, and the National Park Service is not consulted or kept informed, the damage being done may be irreversible.

SENT PHOTO

This is the Rio Grande and the little town of Boquillas, Mexico, viewed from Big Bend National Park. Think what a border wall, or the roads and lights and guard towers, will do to this scenery? To the wildlife that can no longer cross – black bears, panthers, javelinas, and more.

And for what? For the less than one percent of all illegal border crossings that happen here? Not only is this a sin against the Creator, this is also a waste of taxpayer dollars. Billions are being given bid-free to two companies who support Trump. If a Democrat gave away this kind of money for a meaningless project, wouldn’t you be demanding answers? Why are you letting Trump and DHS get away with this?

Big Bend was the first national park I worked in as a park ranger. I was in my mid-50s, and my career as an artist in Maine ended due to the Great Recession. This is one of my all-time favorite places – one of America’s treasures.

National Parks and public lands such as Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments were set aside to preserve in perpetuity habitat, wild lands, cultural sites, and historically significant sites for the American people. These lands belong to the American people, not to Trump or DHS to do as they wish.

Environmental laws have been waived with impunity so cronies can be rewarded with contracts, “illegals” stopped, and profits made from mining and other activities the land was supposed to be protected from. Please don’t send me a form letter saying this isn’t happening. There is enough evidence to the contrary. Have your staff research it for you.

Maybe you have never experienced the soul-enriching vistas and wildlife, the thoughtful cultural and historical sites preserved along with habitat for wildlife, that visitors to national parks and public lands enjoy. Maybe you need to take a trip to Big Bend National Park and the other places you have turned a blind eye toward protecting. Or maybe you just need to ask yourself if the God you worship would approve of the devastation happening to America’s Best Places.

Please do your duty as a patriotic American and put an end to this misappropriation and destruction of Big Bend National Park and adjacent areas, to include Big Bend Ranch State Park, and to Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, and any other of OUR lands slated to be removed from protection.

Thank you.

P.S. Yes Lankford did send a form letter, in which he said, "the government cannot efficiently manage the lands it currently controls...Wildlife and environmental management on federal lands is cumbersome and expensive, causing the federal government to spend millions of dollars a year on environmental reviews, endangered and threatened species mitigation, and invasive species control. These are activities that are often better left to local governments or private entities."

VOTE THEM ALL OUT!

Thanks to a huge public outcry, the destruction in Big Bend National Park is on pause. However, we need to keep on the pressure to get these plans for a "border wall" or a string of vehicle barriers and lights and guard towers, or whatever they say the plan is today, revoked for good.

Not only that, but there are real plans to steal land from 500 property owners along the Rio Grande to erect a border wall where relatively few "illegals" cross. This is nothing more than a taxpayer-funded reward for contractors who supported DJT, and a bone thrown to the MAGA base that has no concept of what is really happening.

Write your congress critters. Write Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. They are stealing America from us in the name of racial purity. (Yes folks, that's at the center of Project 2025.)

DO NOT BE SILENT.

This is from my blog during my first stint as a park ranger at Big Bend National Park in 2009-2010.

THIS. MUST. STOP.

The lawsuit seeks an immediate injunction, arguing that CBP construction and surveying activities in Big Bend violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

The wind was strong and cold yesterday afternoon as I stood at the top of a small peak in Rio Grande Village, but I was too overwhelmed by the spectacular and lonesome scenery to want to leave my magnificent perch.
The river, by size, is hardly "grande." In many places you can toss a stone from the Texas shore and hit Mexico. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in the sheer power of water and silt abrading rocks over eons, creating canyons, unveiling volcanic forms extruded from the bowels of the planet and sedimentary fossils deposited in an ancient sea. The result is the "grande" scenery we call Big Bend.
