Once completed, it will be a 117,000-square-foot facility that will feature a 50-meter competition pool, leisure pool, spa, full-size gymnasium, a splash play area, and much more.

09/09/2023

The Virginia Department of Transportation recently painted a larger pedestrian refuge at the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion crosswalk at the Pavilion Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard intersection. This came at my request after hearing several constituents concerns of not being able to safely cross the intersection. I will continue to look for more permanent improvements as I know the safety of this crosswalk is of much importance to the Ashburn Village community.

A similar painted refuge will also be installed at the crosswalk at the Ashburn Village Boulevard and Gala Circle/Louisa Drive intersection.

A pedestrian refuge is a median with a shelter area that is intended to help protect pedestrians who are crossing a multilane road. The presence of a pedestrian refuge at a midblock location or intersection allows pedestrians to focus on one direction of traffic at a time as they cross, and gives them a place to wait for an adequate gap in oncoming traffic before finishing the second phase of a crossing.

September is National Preparedness Month, which promotes family and community disaster planning. Residents and businesses are encouraged to take time this month to prepare for emergencies.

Like many communities, Loudoun has the potential to experience many types of hazards, such as blizzards, flooding, high winds, power outages, tornadoes and even terrorist events. National Preparedness Month comes in the middle of hurricane season and is a reminder that even though Loudoun is inland, the county is vulnerable to the effects of hurricanes, which can produce extensive flooding hundreds of miles from the coast.

By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies that could occur anytime and anywhere.
• Step 1: Make a plan
• Step 2: Build a kit
• Step 3: Be informed

For more information and to view resources on how to prepare for an emergency, visit: loudoun.gov/ready.

With forecasters calling for very hot weather over the next few days, officials advise residents to be prepared and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. In addition to avoid being outside for long periods of time, residents should also stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous activities.

When the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory for Loudoun County, certain county facilities, including Loudoun County Public Library branches, Loudoun County community centers and recreation centers, serve as designated cooling centers. During normal business hours, the facilities provide air conditioning, water and a place to sit for residents who may need relief from the heat.

For more information about staying safe in excessive heat, visit: loudoun.gov/heat.

With fall now upcoming, I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and are slowly getting back to regular routines. This school year, I have returned to in-person teaching at Sanders Corner Elementary. Although, it’s been a busy first two weeks, I am excited to be back in the classroom with our special education students. As your Supervisor, I've been equally busy and want to share a few recent events with you all:

I had the pleasure of holding Town Hall meetings with the Broadlands and Village of Waxpool communities. I had positive discussions with both communities on transportation and land use projects occurring in Broad Run, county initiatives, and other topics affecting their communities. My office is working to schedule meetings with Westmoore and Vantage Pointe, so be on the lookout for when those dates are announced by your HOAs. If you would like me to come out to your community to discuss a particular topic, please email me at [email protected].

This week I also attended Dominion Energy’s open house on their proposal to run powerlines down Route 7 in Ashburn. I thank all residents who attended the meeting for their engagement in this process. I look forward to continue advocating for a route that is the least intrusive to Broad Run residents. Information on the proposal is available here: DominionEnergy.com/NOVA.

The Ashburn Library also recently celebrated their 20th anniversary! It was great to see the many families who came out to commemorate an important occasion and to learn the origins of one of our beloved community spaces. The Ashburn Library has many exciting events and programs for people of all ages, which can be found here: Library.Loudoun.gov/Ashburn.

Finally, I attended the Virginia Association of Counties Summit in Richmond. The Summit offers an opportunity for local officials all across the Commonwealth to gather and discuss shared issues. As a member of the Education Committee, we discussed the Virginia Department of Education's statewide public school systems funding shortfall that occurred earlier this year. The Board of Supervisors has already pledged to make up that funding shortfall through our end of year fund balance.

Traffic signals at the intersections of Mooreview Parkview and Croson Lane, and Mooreview Parkway and Claude Moore/Wynridge Drives, are scheduled to become fully operational in a couple of days. All drivers should be cautious when driving through both intersections over the next couple of days while the lights are flashing and before they become “full color”. If there are no lights, drivers should continue to treat the intersection as a four-way stop. However, if the lights are flashing yellow then drivers can proceed with caution, and if the lights are flashing red, then drivers must treat the signal as a stop sign.

08/24/2023

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, relaxing summer break with friends and family. I wish all Loudoun County students, teachers, and parents a fantastic first day back in school and a successful new school year!

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents of some important back to school safety tips:

Walking and Biking Safety: If you're walking or biking to school, remember to use designated crosswalks and bike lanes. Always wear a helmet when cycling and stay on the lookout for traffic.

Buddy System: Stick together with friends or classmates when walking to school, waiting for the bus, or heading home. There's strength in numbers!

Bus Safety: For those taking the bus, wait at a safe distance from the road and follow the driver's instructions. Stay seated while the bus is moving.

School Zones: Slow down and be extra cautious in school zones. Watch out for crossing guards and follow their signals. Remember, the speed limit is reduced in these areas for a reason!

Stranger Danger: Remind your kids not to talk to strangers or accept rides from anyone they don't know. If they feel unsafe, they should immediately tell a trusted adult.

Home Alone: If your child is coming home to an empty house, establish clear rules about locking doors, not opening for strangers, and contacting you or a trusted neighbor upon arrival.

08/23/2023

I have received several questions regarding the lane closure and work that is being done underneath the rightmost travel lane of eastbound Waxpool Road between Pacific Boulevard and Route 28.

Washington Gas is carefully removing overlapping unmarked utilities to avoid disruptions in service for nearby residents. The closure and utility work is expected to last through the end of September. Washington Gas is working to get the gas line moved, but they are required to dig with hand tools due to the nature of the utilities in the area, which has slowed the process. I am working with Washington Gas to see if additional resources can be allocated to this project so that the lane can be reopened as soon as possible.

This work is part of a county project to construct intersection improvements and turn lanes at the Pacific Boulevard intersections with Pacific Boulevard and Broderick Drive. Information and status updates on the project can be found online at: Loudoun.gov/5453/Waxpool-Road-at-Pacific-BoulevardBroderi. Drivers are advised to take extra caution when traveling through this area and follow all directions from the posted sign and road crews.

The warning comes after at least five individuals came into contact with a cat that later tested positive for rabies. I just read the article that the Supervisors were hearing arguments about taking control of the Library System. I am staunchly opposed to this proposition. Our Library System is a gem in Loudoun County used to educate our children at a time where parents are doing most of that, engage our citizens at a time where individuals need it, and broaden horizons during a time where we desperately need more of that. The Supervisors have shown in the past to not understand nor value these needs by closing our local library. As your constituent, I am voicing my support of the Loudoun Library Board of Trustees to keep them in control of the library system and to limit Supervisor involvement with the running of it.
