Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps

Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps Medical and non medical volunteers assisting the health department. The MRC unit in Loudoun was formed in November 2003 to improve the county's ability to respond to public health emergencies, whether naturally occurring or man-made.

Medical and non-medical volunteers assist the Health Department in preparing for the possibility of opening emergency mass vaccination and medication dispensing clinics. MRC members can also assist with other public health responses in our community and have the opportunity to be trained in CPR, First Aid and other classes such as REVIVE!if they so desire. The MRC is currently coordinated by Francis Rath and is a component of the health department.

Due to a forecast of inclement weather, #Loudoun County has canceled the COVID-19 testing event scheduled for Friday, January 7, and has also rescheduled all January 7 appointments at the county’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic. Details here: https://bit.ly/34gDhuj

#Loudoun County is now offering COVID-19 vaccine booster appointments for ages 12 and up.
➡️This follows federal and state approval of the booster doses for this age group.
➡️ Also, the interval when people who have had the initial series of Pfizer vaccine can get a booster shot has been shortened from six months to five months.
➡️ And, a third primary series dose for some children ages 5 to 11 who are immunocompromised has been authorized.

#Loudoun County is now offering appointments for children ages 5 to 11 to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
➡We expect that demand for the vaccine for this age group will initially outpace supply and will limit the number of appointments available in the early days of the vaccination effort.
➡As vaccine supplies increase through the month of November, more appointments will open up.

❓ Has the FDA approved Moderna and J&J boosters or not??

The short answer? Not yet. The long answer? Working on it!

Last week, an FDA advisory committee voted in favor of recommending booster doses of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. But they haven't been *approved* quite yet. Visit https://tinyurl.com/3bwy3hyk to learn more.

DYK? You can get a COVID-19 vaccine and a flu vaccine at the same time. COVID-19 vaccines may also be administered with other vaccines without regard to timing. Previous knowledge with other vaccines has shown that the way our bodies develop an immune response, and possible side effects after getting vaccinated, are generally the same when a vaccine is given alone or given with other vaccines. #Loudoun County is now offering booster doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to certain groups of people as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
➡The boosters for these specific populations are to be administered at least six months (180 days) after the second dose of Pfizer vaccine.
➡The recommendations from the CDC do not include people who received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccines

The Loudoun MRC, in conjunction with other MRC units in our region, was activated from 8/17 to 8/25, on short notice, to assist with the Afghan repatriation and refugee efforts at Washington Dulles International Airport. Our primary mission was providing Covid-19 testing and interpretation services.

During these days 95 Loudoun MRC volunteers put in over 921 hours of time in support of this mission. Volunteers worked 3 shifts, 24 hours a day at the airport!

I am incredible proud and thankful for the amazing response we received to our call for assistance and for the willingness of the MRC volunteers to tireless work to assist with this effort.

Loudoun MRC volunteers also remain active with a number of other tasks such as Covid-19 vaccination and testing and back to school events.

We need to be prepared to respond for whatever the future may bring. If you want to be able to help in any health response it is vital that you be part of an organization such as the MRC as, for security reasons, spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers generally can not be used.

For more information or if you would be interested in helping please go to www.loudoun.gov/mrc.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for making INOVA's Back to School Event on Saturday a huge success! It’s a true reflection of “ One Team”. Even with such short notice, they were able to get 40 plus volunteers (MRC and others) to help out with this event. A total of 102 children received a back to school physical, caught up on their vaccinations and received their TB screening. This turn-out demonstrates the large need in our community for the work that we do every day.

Incredible work by everyone!!!!!

I met so many Sugarland/Sterling families today who came out to get vaccinated and boosted — including Jaweria Maqbool who had kids and niece in tow. Thank you to Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps, Loudoun County Health Department & Giant for making these clinics so successful. Volunteer Julie from Catoctin tells me she’s volunteering more than 40 hours a week right now because she wants to get our community back to normal. Clinic is open till 7!

It has been one year since Morgan & Garrett Orthodontics and the state of Virginia were mandated to close their doors due to COVID-19, making 2020 one of the toughest years for small businesses. We were fortunate to be able to keep our staff and reopen seven weeks later. We continue to practice numerous protocols to keep our patients and staff safe. Our team has been vaccinated, and Dr. Kelly Morgan, herself, is a vaccinator for the Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps. Small businesses continue to persevere in the ever changing operating capacity landscape. Please join us in supporting Wi******er area small businesses with your patronage, positive reviews, and referrals/ recommendations. Over 13,000 people have signed up to volunteer with the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps, but we still need more. I have been volunteering my EMT skills with Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps, but you do not need to be a health care provider to join. You can apply and learn more here: http://bit.ly/3jbT6oL. Thank you to everyone working around the clock to keep our Commonwealth safe!

I'll be putting on my EMT/Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps hat again and testing people for COVID-19 this Thursday 11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. at Stone Springs Apartments. A few weeks ago, we had quite a few people come by when I volunteered at HealthWorks for Northern Virginia, and there are several precautions in place to make it fast and safe. If you are experiencing any symptoms or suspect you may be infected, please stop by and get tested! ****EDIT/Note: This is for residents of Stone Springs Apartments*** Here's a great place to find testing near you: http://bit.ly/2AHkiuw. As always, you can reach out to my office at [email protected] or call 804-698-1087.
The Loudoun Medical Reserve Corps is issuing a call for volunteers to play a key role in protecting the community’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. There is a need for both medical and nonmedical personnel. Medical professionals of all types are needed, including doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, dentists, veterinarians and others. Nonmedical volunteers are used in a number of ways, including as translators, logistics support, staffing the information line, performing key clinic roles and other nonmedical functions. MRC volunteers play a vital role in the county’s response to COVID-19. For example, they fully support the Loudoun County Health Department’s COVID-19 information line, assist with testing events and other initiatives, including contact investigations. Officials estimate that since the pandemic began, Loudoun MRC personnel have volunteered more than 7,400 hours, providing a cost-savings to the county of more $200,000. More information about the MRC, including an online registration form, can be found at loudoun.gov/mrc.
