Congratulations to SOLO NY PIZZA for being the Best of Loudoun for Italian restaurants per the results from the Loudoun Times Mirror readers poll. Solo Pizza owner Said Mehenni was also voted as the most colorful character in the poll. Said is a wonderful small business owner in Loudoun County and has been involved in the restaurant business in Leesburg for several decades. We have so many delightful, hard working small business owners and I encourage Loudoun residents to support our small businesses.

While we celebrated Mother's Day this past Sunday, I think mothers are so valuable and so special that we need to have Mother's Week to properly recognize the significant impact mothers play in the lives of their children. We have so many outstanding mothers in Loudoun County who do so much in our communities in addition to playing a vital role in the lives of their children. Happy Mother's Week to all mothers in Loudoun County!

I attended the Victim's Rights Week ceremony hosted by the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and the Victim/Witness Program where several law enforcement and public safety professionals along with some citizens were honored for their efforts as advocates for victims of crime. Chris Brosan from Animal Control (center right) and Chris Hines with the Sheriff's Office (2nd from right) were two individuals among several who received recognition for outstanding service to crime victims. Thank you and congratulations to all recipients on this special recognition.

I remember as a child going out to eat at Gino’s restaurant in Leesburg. Gino’s hasn’t been in Leesburg for several decades now but it serves as a reminder that things do change and evolve. One of the things my team in the clerks office and I decide to change was how we do business for notary public commissions. With the new virtual technology we’ve deployed, Loudoun residents who are qualified by the Commonwealth to serve as notary publics can now receive their commissions virtually as opposed to having to drive to the courthouse for this purpose. Notary public officials have been essential as the volume of real estate transaction has not slowed down during the pandemic. This is just one example of several new virtual technologies we’ve deployed during the pandemic to keep people safe while continuing business opportunities in Loudoun.

Preserving our valuable historic records is important to me so I am delighted that we secured a grant from the Library of Virginia to preserve a 1761 deed book, a 1783 will book and a county court minute book from 1854. The preservation work related to the deed and will books will ensure papers and ink are not damaged over time. The work associated with the county court minute book involves repairs to the cover, repair of torn pages and a deacidification process on the paper. The information in the historic county court minute book provides insight into life in Loudoun in the 1850s before the Board of Supervisors was established. These records reflect how the courts managed local issues related to taxes, regulations, schools, law enforcement and roads in Loudoun County. Come check out these records and thousands of other valuable historic records in my office, many of which you can find online via my office website. www.loudoun.gov/clerk

Loudoun County conducted a topping off ceremony to commemorate the steel beam construction work related to the courts expansion project. At the ceremony, numerous dignitaries, elected officials, judges and representatives from numerous county agencies had the opportunity to sign a steel beam that was placed on the structure. Completion of the courts expansion building is slated for Fall of 2022. If you’re interested in the project, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll connect you with the appropriate county staff responsible for this substantial capital improvements project.

I recently administered the oath of office to Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Moone who recently returned to duty after serving our country in the National Guard overseas for more than a year. I conducted a swearing in ceremony for Deputy Moone in the presence of his colleagues from the Sheriff's Office. I’ve had the pleasure of serving as the public relations committee chair for the Virginia Court Clerks Association (VCCA) for the past 10 years. I was re-appointed to serve in this capacity again this year by Llezelle Dugger, the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Charlottesville, who is the president of the association this year. The committee met recently in the city of Harrisonburg. I asked fellow committee member Chaz Haywood, the Clerk from Rockingham Co./Harrisonburg to serve as co-chair with me as the committee takes on additional important projects this year. “The energy and dedication that Gary puts into the public relations committee is unparalleled. His genuine enjoyment of meeting and engaging people is second to none,” stated VCCA President Dugger.

I have hosted a Black History Month program each year to highlight some of the historic court records that share valuable information in Loudoun's history. Since a conventional in-person education program is not feasible right now, my historic records team and I are offering a virtual program. Each week in February we will share brief information including images of actual records pertaining to Black History. Click here for the program: https://www.loudoun.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=6342
