This week honors our teachers in public and private schools in Loudoun County as it is Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers are continuing to teach during these challenging times and I value their commitment to educating children, teens and young adults. Our three sons were educated in Loudoun County Public Schools (Ashburn Elementary, Sanders Corner Elementary, Cedar Lane Elementary, Farmwell Station Middle School and Broad Run High School) and we are grateful to their teachers, principals, coaches and club leaders. I attended Loudoun schools and acknowledge all of my teachers at Hamilton Elementary, Blue Ridge Middle School and Loudoun Valley High School. (go Vikings!) Thank you to all of my teachers, principals, guidance counselors, coaches and club leaders. Your investment in me is valued as I have been blessed to serve Loudoun residents as your Clerk of Circuit Court for the past 20 years. Thank you to all Loudoun County teachers!

It was an honor to administer the oaths of office to 25 new firefighters/EMTs in Loudoun County who recently completed the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue's 39th recruit training program. The Fire and Rescue leadership team did an excellent job with the logistics of this graduation program by implementing precise social distancing protocols. While the families and friends were not present in person at this ceremony, they could watch via remote video technology. Here is a photo of the socially-distanced swearing in ceremony during the program. In my 20 years as your Clerk of the Circuit Court, this was my first experience with the administration of oaths in this fashion. Congratulations to the 25 new firefighters who are joining the elite professional team of firefighters in Loudoun County. Be careful out there.

Our family enjoyed a wonderful Easter Sunday together and while our son Nathaniel was not able to join us in person, he did join us via Facetime. We enjoyed coloring Easter eggs, painting Easter rocks and sharing a meal together as a family. It was a real blessing to be able to gather as a family (some remotely) to celebrate Easter especially during these challenging times. I hope you and your family are safe and staying healthy.

I hope everyone is safe and staying healthy during this challenging time. It is very sad to see little activity in downtown Leesburg. My office is constantly adapting to recent developments related to COVID-19 so please check out my website for updates. My office remains available to serve our citizens by appointment only as we attempt to limit the number of visitors and exercise local health department recommendations for social distancing. Visit www.loudoun.gov/clerk for details to schedule appointments for essential services. Construction on the new courts complex on Church Street is set for the week of April 6. Here is a photo of some demolition work along Edwards Ferry Road as three old structures were removed recently to accommodate the new construction. Be safe.

Loudoun County, VA - Official Website | Official Website

In an effort to reduce the gathering of people in my office and to promote improved social distancing as recommended by state and local health official as a result of COVID-19, my office is implementing a by appointment-only policy for marriage licenses and notary public commissions. We have closed the historic records research room as most records are available in digital format and I am providing a free subscription account to Loudoun residents for 30 days to access these digital records. Any individual who needs to research the historic documents and cannot rely exclusively on the digital records may contact my staff to schedule an appointment to visit the research room. Questions can be submitted to [email protected]. Starting March 23, we will have drop boxes at some of our customer service transaction windows where our clients can deliver deed recordings and legal papers for filing. My staff will contact those individuals to confirm recordation and/or filing status. Questions regarding the new drop box approach to deliver recordings and filings can be submitted via email at [email protected]. More information regarding these new measures and other measures that will promote social distancing/eliminate the gathering of large groups and still permit my office to continue operations can be found as www.loudoun.gov/clerk. More information on the County's response to COVID-19 can be found at www.loudoun.gov.

Clerk of the Circuit Court | Loudoun County, VA - Official Website

My office is expanding remote services to Loudoun residents to encourage our clients to seek alternative ways to obtain service in lieu of coming to the courthouse to receive services and transact business. A recent announcement of these expanded remote services is posted on my government website at www.loudoun.gov/clerk. Before coming to my office to transact business, obtain copies of public records or seek other assistance, please visit my website for more details. The website also provides department email addresses where you can inquire about the opportunity to transact business remotely and avoiding a personal appearance in my office if possible. We are trying to limit the gathering of large groups and promote social distancing while attempting to remain available to assist our residents but we need your help. Please visit my website and the County government website at www.loudoun.gov for daily updates on how county government is maintaining operations while addressing the serious situation of coronavirus (COVID-19). Please be safe and help each other.

The last JMU home basketball game in the Convocation Center was played this past weekend. I had the pleasure of attending the last home game in the Convo with several friends from Loudoun and my good friend and JMU college roommate Glenn Wayland who now works for JMU. I was able to connect with our son Joel who is finishing up his senior year at JMU as a music major. I look forward to the new basketball arena that will open for the 2020-2021 season. Virginia has several outstanding universities and colleges and I hope all Loudoun high school seniors interested in college are firming up their plans to continue their academic pursuits. Go JMU Dukes!

Forty years ago today, the United States Men's Olympic hockey team won gold in the 1980 Olympics. It was an exciting time as the USA team was not expected to advance beyond the quarterfinals yet they achieved the gold medal. This event stirred up pride in our nation and brought people together. Let us all remember the power of being united and coming together to do wonderful things in our community, in our county, in our Commonwealth and in our nation. May God Bless the USA!

Maria, our son Zach and I attended the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Rescue Department - AVFRD Chili Cook-off Fundraiser this past weekend at Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn. Several restaurants provided wonderful samples of their chili expertise to assist with the fundraising efforts. Thanks to Bourbon Beer & BBQ, Bungalow Alehouse, City Tap House, Clyde's at Willow Creek, DC Prime, Ford's Fish Shack, Great American Steakhouse, Lansdowne Resort, Lost Fox, Matchbox, Rescue BBQ and The Zone for helping a wonderful community organization. Here are Zach and I enjoying some chili with Tony Stafford from Ford's Fish Shack and Keith Early from Bungalow Alehouse during the festivities. Thank you to everyone who came out in the cold and wet weather to attend and donate to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue team. Special thanks to Chris Burns and his team at Old Ox for hosting the event.

Here's a few more photos of some of the swearing in ceremonies for elected officials and deputies for some of our constitutional officers. I administered the oath of office to Supervisor Koran Saines (Sterling District) as his son and father witnessed the swearing in. After administering the oath of office to Sheriff Mike Chapman, I administered the oath to the management team of Sheriff's deputies in a special ceremony. The deputies who serve in constitutional offices are vital so I was pleased to give the oath to Chief Deputy Sue Breen as Commissioner of Revenue Bob Wertz witnessed. Thank you all for your service to the citizens of Loudoun County.

Happy New Year! Your local elected officials have commenced their terms of office on January 1, 2020 and prior to the commencement of their new terms, I had the privilege and honor of administering the oaths of office to the Constitutional Officers, members of the Board of Supervisors and directors of the Soil and Water Conservation District. Additionally, I administered the oaths of office to hundreds of Sheriff's deputies and numerous deputy treasurers and deputy commissioners of revenue. Here are some photos of the swearing in ceremony of Supervisor Matthew Letourneau (Dulles District) and Treasurer Roger Zurn and his deputy treasurer team following the administration of oaths to Mr. Zurn and his team of dedicated public servants.

The 11th annual Jingle Jam this past weekend was a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays and the band certainly helped the audiences get into the Christmas spirit by playing some amazing Christmas tunes. All proceeds from the Jingle Jam go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Band members included Todd Wright, Gary Smallwood, Jon Carroll, Prescott Engle, Michael Sheppard, Cal Everett and several others who shared their musical and vocal talents at three different shows. Special thanks to Stilson Greene for organizing this delightful holiday event and thank you to the Tally Ho Theater for hosting this program again this year.

Many of my esteemed colleagues have retired in 2019 and will be missed among the ranks for circuit court clerks in Virginia. There are a total of 120 elected circuit court clerks in Virginia representing a variety of counties and cities in the Commonwealth. Some of these colleagues include clerks with whom I have worked closely on statewide projects and include Bobby Wrenn from Greensville County, Carol Brydge from Augusta County, Cathy Hogan from Bedford County and Tom Roberts from the City of Staunton. Pictured here are several clerks attending the retirement party for Carol Brydge in the Augusta County Courthouse. Thank you to all clerks who are retiring in 2019 as we appreciate your years of service in your respective jurisdictions and in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
