Today is Share Your Story in Virginia 4-H, so Mama Kim will share hers! Hi! My 4-H Story starts way back in the last century! I attended 4-H camp with my cousins back when I was 10 years old. Many won't believe this, but I was a bit of a quiet kid. I came back again when I was 12 or 13 and I was then considered a new camper and I was still quiet. At the end of the week, I was awarded the "Hands" award and the Camp Director, Georgia Holder came and told me that she had seen me helping others. She encouraged me to come back as a CIT the next summer and my life was changed!

That spark of interest then grew into 5 more years of Camp involvement and it really influenced my life. During those years, I also became an FFA member. Our chapter was dual enrolled as a 4-H Club and I had to have a project. My parents agreed to build a pen for sheep and I started showing animals in my Junior year of High School. All of the experiences I had during that short but action packed 4-H career made a huge impact on my life!

Fast forward a few years and the opportunity to work in the local 4-H office came up. My husband and I had been volunteering with the livestock judging team, so I was familiar with the program. For almost 20 years, I have had the opportunity to give back to a program that profoundly affected my life. In return, I have met some of the most wonderful people through my job! I've had the chance to be a mentor to many youth in the last 20 years. In helping them grow, I have grown myself and I am beyond blessed to work in Loudoun 4-H!

Continuing into Virginia 4-H Spirit Week, itโ€™s TELL YOUR 4-H STORY TUESDAY! ๐Ÿ““โœ๏ธโค๏ธHow did you get involved? What goals ha...

Continuing into Virginia 4-H Spirit Week, itโ€™s TELL YOUR 4-H STORY TUESDAY! ๐Ÿ““โœ๏ธโค๏ธ

How did you get involved? What goals have you achieved? Share your 4-H story with us!

๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€

Ms. Carlyโ€™s 4-H Story:

โ€œMy 4-H journey began at the age of 10, when I visited the Loudoun County Fair for the first time. It was there that my parents bought me my first rabbit, which led to my initial enrollment in the Loudoun County 4-H program that October.

In the eight years that followed, after learning about all of the opportunities that 4-H provides, I jumped at the chance to get more involved in both club and county activities. I served in various club officer roles, on the countyโ€™s Teen Council and emceed a wide variety of county contests. In 2006, I attended my first 4-H State Congress and was inducted into the Virginia 4-H All Stars.

My last few years as a 4-H member were the best I couldโ€™ve ever asked for, as I achieved the top goals I had set for myself. In addition to becoming an All Star, I helped grow our club from eight members to over forty, was named Miss Loudoun County Fair and was the Senior Champion in Round Robin; an all-species showmanship competition that I've had the pleasure of organizing since 2010.

In 2012, after graduating college, I returned home to Loudoun and volunteered as a 4-H Club Leader for four years. During that time, I also served on the Loudoun Fair & Associates Board of Directors, one of Loudoun 4-Hโ€™s biggest supporters. In 2016, I was blessed with the opportunity to turn my passion into a career when I was offered the position of 4-H Extension Agent.

Being a part of 4-H was not a family tradition for me. As a first generation 4-Her, Iโ€™m eternally grateful for the organization that has shaped my life. I gained knowledge, lasting friendships, life-long mentors and learned life skills that made me the person I am today. 4-H has always been a true passion of mine and I continue to love every minute of it

Thank you 4-H for showing me how to forge my own path and to lead others along the way.โ€

LoCo 4-H hosted a Zoom session today on how to make a Granny Square! We will post a video tutorial here as soon as we can! If you crochet and want to help our cause, we are looking for Granny Squares about 5 in. x 5 in. in any color to piece together for a blanket that can be raffled/auctioned to benefit the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center. I used a 5.5 mm hook and #4 yarn, but you can use any size to achieve gauge.
