The Community Gardens at Independence will grow Organic Fruits, Vegetables, and Native Texas Plants. It will teach students the latest Agriculture Methods, and provide a project based learning environment students will utilize on a day-to-day basis. Upon completion, it will be the only Community Garden of its kind in the Lewisville district. Future plans for the Garden include a weekend Farmerʼs Market, Student Nutritional Education, Plot Rentals, and so much more.

It all began with a simple school lunch. When our Founder, Chonnie Richey, had lunch with her daughter Sofia, she couldn’t believe how students (and school staff!) viewed the food in the cafeteria. She saw first hand how food was thrown away and set out to find ways to connect children to food. In 2013, the vision for Independence Gardens sprouted. Like-minded organizations came together and the parent-led team at Independence Gardens set out to implement ways of providing an engaging environment where ALL students, regardless of their socio-economic status can connect with food through experiential programs.
Our first edible outdoor learning space in our namesake homeschool – Independence Elementary, providing each of the 800 children an opportunity to participate in this nutrition education experience. But it was more than a school garden, we incorporated organic practices and sustainable practices including: wicking beds, square foot gardening, composting, recycling, and water reclamation. We believed that by holistically teaching and connecting children with food – in this fashion – they will begin taking responsibility for the food they are eating – begin making healthier food choices, and contribute to the overall wellness of their world. And – when students learned actively versus passively, the connection happens automatically.
What I didn’t realize – was – with this singular thought – this belief to make things better for my daughter – we were also beginning to make a positive and profound impact on the overall well being of thousands of children in our community.
