Mission: We have a simple mission: to partner with schools in developing and implementing experiential edible gardening programs that will provide every student an engaging, meaningful and transformative educational experience. This uninhibited learning will be accomplished through working partnerships with our community and schools, aiding in implementation of curriculum that address sustainable and ecological gardening practices, and provide an avenue for students to develop life skills in areas such as nutrition, leadership, and decision making.

Now more than ever, nutrition education is becoming more important in our schools. Successful students start with access to fresh food, that is nutritionally balanced - all fueling their minds and bodies.

In the upcoming - not so normal - school year, we will continue to provide elementary schools and students across the country resources and engaging learning tools that will not only expand their culinary palette but connect them with food in a fun new way. They will learn social studies (where ingredients come from), math (measuring), language arts (journaling their experience), and nutrition!

Locally, we are preparing for Spring Planting and paving the way for children to experience nutrition education by growing their food, harvesting, and cooking them!

For as little as $5, we are able to provide a class the seeds they will need to start connecting with their food.

This year, we are launching North Texas Giving Day from the kitchen of one of our restaurant partners, LaVui Vietnamese Restaurant . Join us LIVE, this Thursday, September 17th - at 9:30 a.m. as we showcase their fresh food in a Come and Eat IT, chef series.

Thank you in advance for your continued support!

Our Story

It all began with a simple school lunch. When our Founder, Chonnie Richey, had lunch with her daughter Sofia, she couldn’t believe how students (and school staff!) viewed the food in the cafeteria. She saw first hand how food was thrown away and set out to find ways to connect children to food. In 2013, the vision for Independence Gardens sprouted. Like-minded organizations came together and the parent-led team at Independence Gardens set out to implement ways of providing an engaging environment where ALL students, regardless of their socio-economic status can connect with food through experiential programs.

Our first edible outdoor learning space in our namesake homeschool – Independence Elementary, providing each of the 800 children an opportunity to participate in this nutrition education experience. But it was more than a school garden, we incorporated organic practices and sustainable practices including: wicking beds, square foot gardening, composting, recycling, and water reclamation. We believed that by holistically teaching and connecting children with food – in this fashion – they will begin taking responsibility for the food they are eating – begin making healthier food choices, and contribute to the overall wellness of their world. And – when students learned actively versus passively, the connection happens automatically.

What I didn’t realize – was – with this singular thought – this belief to make things better for my daughter – we were also beginning to make a positive and profound impact on the overall well being of thousands of children in our community.
