On Tuesday, the Denton County Commissioners Court recognized Jack Miller for his 18 years as chairman and for completing his 10th two-year term of service on the Denco Area 911 District Board of Managers. Under Mr. Miller’s guidance, the Next Generation 9-1-1 system that received national recognition as the NG 9-1-1 Institute’s 9-1-1 Program of the Year was established.

Mr. Miller, who is retiring from the board effective Sept. 30th, also has served as mayor and council member on the City Council for City of Denton, TX - City Hall, board member and vice chairman of the North Texas Tollway Authority, chairman of the North Central Texas Regional Transportation Council, chairman of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, president of Theatre Denton and much more.

Callers who communicate using a TTY or TTD device for the deaf, have equal access to 9-1-1 services. In an emergency, hearing-impaired callers should dial 9-1-1 and connect to TTY, then tap a few TTY keys. TENA established the award to, “honor an individual who has shown extraordinary leadership in advancing 9-1-1 in Texas and whose name is synonymous with Texas and 9-1-1.” There is no one more deserving of this description, and we are proud to congratulate Mike on this well-deserved honor!

After 26 years in 9-1-1 administration and 19 years of service to Denco 9-1-1, Executive Director Mark Payne has announced his plans to resign his position on December 31, 2019, to accept a position with Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Flower Mound. On November 21st, the Denco Board of Managers accepted his resignation and wished him well in his new career pursuits. Deputy Executive Director Greg Ballentine has been named Executive Director to succeed Mark.

It is time to honor our heroes! National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW) is April 14-20, 2019. NPSTW is a week dedicated to celebrating the first responders you do not meet in a time of crisis. Telecommunicators are the first voice you hear when dialing 9-1-1. They are responsible for gathering vital information and organizing the law enforcement, fire and emergency medical resources to respond in an emergency. Frequently, Telecommunicators are able to provide life-saving instructions to callers in advance of help arriving. Telecommunicators are the first, first responder.

There are more than 200 professional and dedicated Telecommunicators serving in the Denco Area 9-1-1 District. Please join us in taking this special week to appreciate our local Telecommunicators and say thank you for their service 365 days a year!

"Things to Remember When Calling 9-1-1" PSA Featuring Angela Bassett

As part of NENA's 9-1-1 Education Month activities for 2019, the association announced the debut of a nationwide PSA campaign featuring the star of Fox's hit show 9-1-1, Angela Bassett. The thirty-second PSA, focused on providing the public with tips on what to do when calling 9-1-1, and will run as part of the pre-show in select movie theaters nationwide from April 5-18. With an anticipated viewership of more than two million, this campaign represents one of the largest public education efforts ever undertaken by the association.
