Kentucky's first Plaza Comunitaria is officially here!

We were honored to host the ribbon cutting for this historic program, led by Casa de la Cultura KY in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis and Global Lex. Plaza Comunitaria gives Spanish-speaking adults a free path to complete their elementary and secondary education and earn official credentials online. This program will open doors to jobs and higher education right here in Lexington.

Still buzzing from our collaboration with the Women’s Business Center of Kentucky on their first-ever fully bilingual Strong Women, Strong Coffee event at The The Melroy , kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month! ☕💪

Attendees got to hear Natalia's Pastry Shop share her business success journey and what it’s really like to launch, and thrive, as a business owner. These sessions are held monthly and are a wonderful opportunity for networking, learning, and community.

We’re still buzzing from Friday night! 🎉🇲🇽
Global Lex was honored to host the ribbon cutting for Kentucky’s first-ever Plaza Comunitaria, in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis and Casa de la Cultura Ky . Deep gratitude to Consul Maki Teramoto and her incredible team for bringing this program to our residents.

Plaza Comunitaria gives any Spanish speaker the opportunity to earn their primary and secondary education credentials, free of charge and online, through a curriculum based on the Mexican educational system. These official degrees open doors to jobs and higher education, making this a game changer for lifelong learning in our community.

The evening also held a beautiful surprise: Consul Teramoto presented Casa de la Cultura founder and executive director Mónica Calleja with the prestigious Reconocimiento Ohtli, one of the highest honors the Mexican government bestows on those who serve Mexican communities abroad. Ms. Calleja also serves on the Mayor’s International Affairs Advisory Commission and the Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Commission.

What an incredible and special night. This is what community looks like. 💛

What an incredible screening and conversation at the Twelve Lions Film Festival !

We had the honor of hosting a Global Lex Featured Screening of *Pinball*, followed by a Q&A with director and producer Naveen Chaubal. Together, we explored the film’s themes of identity, home, and belonging, as well as Naveen’s intentional choice to flip the script on documentary storytelling — steering away from what he described as the colonial history of the form to instead tell the subjective story of the film’s characters and let the audience find their own emotional truth.

*Pinball* is a Kentucky story. It puts us in the mind of Yosef, a young Iraqi American Kentuckian who relocated to Louisville, and follows his ongoing journey to find his place and his path.

Thank you to Twelve Lions and The Kentucky Theatre for giving this story a platform and making this conversation possible, and thank you to everyone who came, engaged, and asked such thoughtful questions.

🎬 THIS FRIDAY! Join us at Twelve Lions Film Festival at the beautiful and historic The Kentucky Theatre at 1:40 PM for a special Global Lex Featured Screening of Pinball — the debut film from director Naveen Chaubal.

The Wall Street Journal called it a debut "of genuine artistic poise" that "attains the weight of well-wrought drama." Pinball follows Yosef, a young man in Louisville whose family settled there as refugees after fleeing Iraq in 2003, as he and his family navigate complex questions of home, identity, and belonging.

It's a Kentucky story. It's an immigrant story. It's an American story. And it's one we can't wait to experience with you on the big screen. 🍿

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Naveen Chaubal, moderated by GlobalLex Executive Director Dr. Basel Touchan.
