The 2022 Kentucky General Assembly has been in session since January. There’s a lot of proposed legislation that will affect survivors of domestic and sexual violence – both positively and negatively.

However, one bill in particular that is making it’s way to the Governor’s desk has caught our attention for the devastating impact it will have on survivors, their families, and communities.

In Kentucky, there is no state law that protects victims of domestic violence from gun violence. However, judges ruling on protective orders are permitted to remove fi****ms from perpetrators of domestic violence under federal law. Removing guns from perpetrators, people who wish to cause harm to victims and those they love, has undoubtedly saved lives.

Yet, now the Kentucky General Assembly is moving toward taking this protection away. HB 29, which has already been passed by the House and is moving through the Senate, proposes to make the enforcement of federal firearm laws a crime.

When perpetrators have fi****ms, the effects extend far beyond the intimate relationship, affecting children, coworkers, law enforcement officers, community members, and others.

Here are a few facts regarding fi****ms and domestic violence perpetrators:

More than two-thirds of mass shootings are domestic violence incidents or are perpetrated by people with a history of domestic violence.

Domestic violence perpetrators with fi****ms are five times more likely to kill their victims.

Every month more than 70 women in the US are killed by an intimate partner using a firearm.

Please consider contacting your representatives and let them know such a law would be terrible for Kentucky.
Conflict is a normal and expected part of any relationship. You're going to have disagreements and that's okay! Conflict is an opportunity for growth, not blame. In a healthy relationship, both people listen to each other's concerns and are free to express their own. The goal of healthy conflict is to reach a mutually agreed upon solution, not for one person to win.
In healthy relationships, a partner does not use their hurt feelings as an excuse to treat the other person badly. They do not say things like, “You got me so upset that I could not help my reaction”. A good partner doesn't place blame on the other and takes responsibility for their feelings and actions.
In healthy relationships, both partners are caring and empathetic. Both partners provide support and do things they know will make they other person happy.
In healthy relationships, each person's needs, whishes, and interests are just as important as the other person's. While there is compromise, the relationship feels balanced, like both people are putting the same effort into the success of the relationship.
Boundaries are respected in a healthy relationship. Each partner is still their own person with a right to their space and privacy. Partners value each other’s alone time and do not look at the other one’s phone, social media, emails, or journals without permission.
Warning signs of abuse from your partner include:
- Checking your phone, texts, email, or social media accounts without your permission
- Putting you down in front of other people
- Extreme jealousy and possessiveness
- Explosive outbursts or mood swings
Love isn't telling someone what to do, what to wear, and how to act. In healthy relationships, partners respect you for who you are.
In a good relationship, both partners’ feelings matter. At times you may not understand your partner’s hurt feelings or why an issue is important to them, but you don't have to understand everything to care about how they feel. A healthy partnership does not attempt to shut someone down.
Healthy relationships develop over time. People get to know each other slowly and gradually build trust and closeness. The relationship moves at the speed that feels enjoyable for each person. A healthy relationship isn't rushed in a way that makes you feel overwhelmed.
It's natural to share interests with the person you're dating, but keep developing an identity outside of that person, too. Developing your own interests and hobbies helps with being more confident in your relationships. In healthy relationships, the other person should be supportive of your hobbies and does not need to be involved in every part of your life.

In a healthy relationship, partners aren't threatened by a person's other relationships. Each person has the freedom to take part in social activities on their own without their partner being jealous or making them feel guilty.
