Even though there are regulations, permitting processes, and oversight, fireworks are still dangerous! This is why the UK Fire Marshal enforces safeguards during events that have been properly vetted and permitted for fireworks. DON'T CROSS THE SAFETY LINES! Even though this type of fireworks show had been used without incident before doesn't mean that something can happen. STAY SAFE UK AND GO CATS!

The UK Fire Marshal wishes all of our campus community and a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! Here are a few tips to help you safely enjoy the holiday!

1. Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
2. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
3. Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
4. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
5. Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
6. Keep knives out of the reach of children.
7. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
8. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
9. Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
10. Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Sean Payton smashed fire alarm in locker room before Saints win over Bengals

If the fire alarm sounds at an athletic or concert event, this IS NOT the way to respond. Fire alarms are made to be annoying to alert you and respond during an unsafe situation, so do not assume that it is a false alarm just because you can't see or smell smoke or fire. Fires double in size everything minute so a fire situation can very quickly become a deadly situation. Stay Fire Safe UK!

The UK Fire Marshal wishes our community and yours a happy and safe July 4th! Here are some firework safety tips to keep your family safe!

Use fireworks outdoors only.

Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

Never point or throw fireworks at another person
Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks including sparklers. Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.

Avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper. This is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.

Be careful when lighting the fuse. Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.

Light fireworks one at a time, then quickly back up to a safe distance

Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them. They can kill you!

Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”

Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.

Stay Fire Safe UK!
