Lexington Woman Sentenced to Life in Prison After Being Found Guilty of Statutory So**my

LEXINGTON, MO – Lafayette County Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Hilbrenner announces that Amber Smoot, 29, of Lexington, Missouri was found guilty by a Lafayette County jury of Statutory So**my in the First Degree on July 8, 2026. On September 8, 2026, the defendant was sentenced to life in the Department of Corrections.

Charges were filed in February of 2025, after law enforcement had been notified that the defendant’s romantic partner, Jose Zuniga, possibly possessed child po*******hy. A search warrant was served on the residence belonging to the defendant and Zuniga and child po*******hy was located. A child was identified in some of the images and videos and the child disclosed during a forensic interview, conducted at Child Safe in Sedalia, that she had been photographed by Zuniga. Images containing the defendant committing sexual acts on the child were located by law enforcement during their investigation. To protect the privacy of the victim, no further information will be provided.

During the trial, Prosecuting Attorney Hilbrenner called several witnesses to testify, including the child, who is now eighteen but was approximately seven at the time of the offenses. At sentencing, Hilbrenner argued that this defendant deserved no less than the maximum sentence allowed by law for the heinous crime she committed against this young child. “This defendant and her co-defendant stole this girl’s childhood from her. She will never be able to get that back. Her life is forever changed. And while a life sentence can not undo any of that, at least it will give this victim the justice she deserves.” The Honorable Josh Taylor, who presided over the trial and the sentencing, agreed with the State and sentenced the defendant to life in prison.

This investigation began because individuals in the community believed something harmful was going on so they reported it to law enforcement. 🚨 SCAM ALERT: IMPERSONATION & FRAUD WARNING 🚨

The Lexington Police Department is warning residents of a sophisticated scam currently targeting members of our community.

How the Scam Works:

The Setup: A victim receives a call from someone claiming to be from "Chase: JP Morgan," stating that a fraudulent credit card was opened in their name and used to purchase four fi****ms in New York for $4,000.

The Transfer: The fake bank representative offers to transfer the victim directly to the "New York City Police Department" to file an official report.

The Fake Officer: The scammer on the line impersonates an NYPD officer to take a report—using actual officers' names and badge numbers. They have even used AI-generated technology and photos of real officers to make the scam appear convincing.

The Goal: The fake officer will ask for your personal and financial information to "complete the report."

The Truth:
This is NOT an officer with the NYPD. Detective J. Newman of the Lexington Police Department has spoken directly with the NYPD and confirmed that this is a total scam.

What You Need to Know:

Protect Your Info: Scammers do not have your sensitive information unless you give it to them. Never share your Social Security number, banking details, or personal data over the phone.

Verify Independently: If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. Call your bank or credit card company directly using the number on the back of your card to check your account status.

bullet and stab protective vests thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit
organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 vest were
embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in
K9s, Inc.”. K9 Sasha’s vest was embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Don
Fike.”.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose
mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of
law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially
lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and
National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in
K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states,
made possible by both private and corporate donations.
The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and

The Lexington Police department would like to remind the community and Leslie Bell Families of the drop off/ pick up procedures for the school.

The safety of our students is the utmost priority.

If you are dropping off children in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon, we ask that you utilize the pick-up/drop-off line on Monroe street. Please do not park/ drop off children on Bloom, South, 20th street, Oneida, Poplar, the parking lot on Monroe or the alley way between Bloom and Oneida. Please use the line! This creates a traffic back up and citizens who live in the area cannot get through roadways, or down the alley.
The biggest concern is that we have students from all directions, attempting to cross the street. This is unsafe, and it cannot continue. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Starting tomorrow we will increase patrol and have more officers watching.

Leslie Bell staff works hard to make sure the drop off / pick up line moves swiftly and everyone is safe.

Training Day at LMS.

The Lexington Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and community. As part of that commitment, our officers regularly conduct active shooter response training within the Lexington School District.

Training in our school buildings provides officers with valuable familiarity with building layouts, entry points, classrooms, and other critical areas. It also allows officers to practice coordinated response tactics in the environment where they would respond if an emergency were ever to occur.

These training exercises are are an important part of maintaining preparedness. While we hope these skills are never needed, regular training helps ensure our officers are ready to respond quickly and effectively to protect our students, staff, and community.

The Lexington Police Department appreciates the continued support of the Lexington School District as we work together to keep our schools as safe as possible.

UPDATE – Lexington Police Department!

The Lexington Police Department would like to thank our community for its assistance regarding the request for information about an incident reported to have occurred at College Park on State Street.

After thoroughly reviewing surveillance footage from the park and surrounding areas, as well as following up on the information received, investigators were unable to substantiate the claim that was reported. At this time, there is no threat to the public

The purpose of our original post was to seek information about a claim that had been made so investigators could determine exactly what occurred. We appreciate everyone who shared information and helped us conduct a thorough investigation.

As a reminder, parents and guardians are encouraged to closely supervise and monitor their children while they are at the park or any public space, especially during evening hours.

The Lexington Police Department is asking for the public's assistance regarding an incident that occurred this evening at College Park on State Street.

If your child was present at College Park between 9:00 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, we ask that you please contact the Lexington Police Department. Investigators are seeking to speak with individuals who may have witnessed or have information related to an incident that occurred during that time.

Even if you are unsure whether your child observed anything significant, any information they may have could be helpful to the investigation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lexington Police Department

On Saturday, August 1, at approximately 12:44 p.m., officers with the Lexington Police Department were dispatched to the area of Summit Camp Road following a report of a deceased individual.

Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult male who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual had been wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred in Richmond, Missouri.

At this time, there is no threat to the public. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing in coordination with the appropriate agencies.

The Lexington Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Richmond Police Department for their assistance during the search efforts conducted the previous evening.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available and is appropriate for public disclosure.
