It was a pleasure to join Governor Beshear, Mayor Gorton, Sen Thomas and many community members in supporting my Council colleague Hil Boone as he and his business partner cut the ribbon on Lexington’s only medical cannabis cultivation facility, Holler Cannabis.

The company will produce edibles, oils and vapes that will be sent to medical dispensaries serving people with qualifying conditions. Those conditions include cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy and PTSD. Cannabis is considered a safe alternative treatment for many conditions and is now regulated by the state for safety purposes.

The Urban County Council is scheduling a Special Committee of the Whole (COW) Meeting to receive public comment and discuss zoning rules and regulations related to data centers.

The Urban County Council will receive the Planning Commission’s recommendations on how to update local zoning rules and vote to formally schedule the October 6, 2026, Special COW during its August 25 Work Session. Additionally, staff from the Division of Planning are scheduled to give an informational presentation to the General Government & Planning Committee on September 8, 2026.

Information on the progress of Fayette County’s data center zoning updates is available to the public on the Engage Lexington platform. Residents are encouraged to learn more and submit written feedback by visiting Engage.LexingtonKY.Gov/DataCenters.

I am heartbroken by the tragic shooting that occurred on Saturday during this year’s East End Day. What is meant to be a joyful annual celebration—deeply cherished within our Black community and close to my own heart as someone who grew up in the East End—was shattered by senseless violence. Multiple neighbors were injured, and we mourn the devastating loss of a 16 year old young man whose life was taken far too soon.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones, and my prayers are with all who were wounded and traumatized. Even though I do not currently represent the first district, the East End is part of my story, and I stand in solidarity with Councilmember Morton and the community during this painful time. I am committed to working with residents, partners, ONE Lexington and law enforcement to support healing and to help prevent such tragedies across our city in the future.

RECOVERING: On Monday, ONE Lexington director, Devine Carama, who witnessed the shooting from just a few feet away, dispatched his team to various Fayette County elementary schools to greet the children and make them feel safe. Carama went to William Wells Brown Elementary School. LEX News' Michael Berk has more below.

As we have experienced with this summer’s storm season, natural hazards like flooding and severe weather can affect many facets of our city, including public safety, infrastructure and the environment. This is why the city is updating our Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Your feedback and concerns will help us guide priorities, identify local risks and outline new strategies. Share your thoughts in the survey at the link in our comments before it closes on Monday, Aug. 31.

⛈️Do you have debris around your yard from recent storms? Here’s a helpful message from our friends at Live Green Lexington:

⛈️ Because many residents have storm debris, you do not have to bundle branches for City curbside collection through August 21.

+ Stack storm debris between the sidewalk & curb, never on the street or sidewalk.
+ Branches & trees must be 4 feet long or less.
+ Unbundled yard waste will be collected until August 21. After that, sticks & branches must be bundled with twine before being set on the curb. Bundles should be less than 4 feet long & weigh less than 50 pounds.
+ Yard waste can be put in your gray yard waste cart. Do not overload the cart. The lid should be able to close.

Residents can also drop off yard waste 2/month for free at Haley Pike, 4216 Hedger Lane. Haley Pike is open 8am- 5pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday.
