The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has activated the community's Emergency Winter Weather Plan for this evening Wednesday, March 20th through and including the morning of Thursday, March 21st. The OHPI will monitor conditions and update as appropriate.

This plan provides a coordinated response for times when extreme cold weather creates additional, immediate need for expanded capacity to assist persons experiencing homelessness in Lexington. Extreme temperatures often force persons to seek shelter who may not otherwise seek assistance.

Shelters will add capacity to accommodate those in need. Please see the attached detailed plan for specific shelter processes and availability. Lexington providers have made arrangements to welcome all eligible persons, including former residents under suspension for behavioral or programmatic reasons. Exceptions may include individuals suspended for violence and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Providers and the OHPI will collaborate to ensure emergency shelter is available for anyone who seeks it.

Key to this year’s plan is the operation of a temporary winter weather shelter operated by the Hope Center. This temporary shelter—located on the campus of the North Lexington YMCA (381 W Loudon Ave)—can accommodate up to 160 persons. Unaccompanied adult men and women (18 and over) will be accepted, including limited capacity to accept pets. The shelter will operate for the duration of the season until March 31st. The shelter will operate 24/7 during this period.
