The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has activated the community's Emergency Winter Weather Plan for this evening Wednesday, March 20th through and including the morning of Thursday, March 21st. The OHPI will monitor conditions and update as appropriate.

This plan provides a coordinated response for times when extreme cold weather creates additional, immediate need for expanded capacity to assist persons experiencing homelessness in Lexington. Extreme temperatures often force persons to seek shelter who may not otherwise seek assistance.

Shelters will add capacity to accommodate those in need. Please see the attached detailed plan for specific shelter processes and availability. Lexington providers have made arrangements to welcome all eligible persons, including former residents under suspension for behavioral or programmatic reasons. Exceptions may include individuals suspended for violence and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Providers and the OHPI will collaborate to ensure emergency shelter is available for anyone who seeks it.

Key to this year’s plan is the operation of a temporary winter weather shelter operated by the Hope Center. This temporary shelter—located on the campus of the North Lexington YMCA (381 W Loudon Ave)—can accommodate up to 160 persons. Unaccompanied adult men and women (18 and over) will be accepted, including limited capacity to accept pets. The shelter will operate for the duration of the season until March 31st. The shelter will operate 24/7 during this period.

The LIHEAP Crisis program is continuing to accept applications from households in Bourbon, Lexington-Fayette, Harrison, and Nicholas Counties!
LIHEAP Crisis is an assistance program that helps qualifying households with a home heating emergency.
A heating emergency means having a disconnect notice, facing imminent loss of heat or low fuel supply, or households facing eviction if utilities are included in their monthly rent.
If your household’s income is up to and including 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, you could qualify for LIHEAP assistance for electricity, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil.

❄️ Slip-Proof Your Space: Use non-slip mats and rugs to prevent falls at home.
❄️ Heating Safety: Ensure proper functioning of heaters and fireplaces to avoid accidents.
❄️ Regular Check-ins: Encourage frequent check-ins or visits during cold weather to ensure they're warm and comfortable.
