BREAKING: City of Nicholasville to consider adopting a data center moratorium to allow for more time to learn more about the issues, opportunities, and what a type of zoning and planning requirements may need to be adopted. Mayor Alex Carter requested City Attorney Darren Sammons to review the proposed moratorium, which was a copy of the one issued in Lexington. Commissioner Bethany Brown agreed that a learning period would be beneficial to ensure all sides are properly weighed and the city zoning or planning ordinances are reviewed and potentially changed or created.

This is the type of smart and strategic pause that is needed to ensure city and county planning is done properly. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, a pause before expansion of any industry - especially one that is resource intensive - is wise and ensures regulation is not reactionary. As they say: a failure to plan is a plan to fail.

Thank you to April Davis Whitaker for introducing the moratorium based on the one adopted in Lexington. It’s citizens like her who can approach their communities right now - before a proposed data center project hits her headlines - to make sure that our elected officials are working for us and our planning and zoning is created in a way that is forward looking rather than looking to make up lost ground.

Father’s Day doesn’t mean joy and celebration for everyone. For some, it’s a painful reminder of what they lost, didn’t have, or still must endure. Make space for all of those experiences because every story is different and being human is being unique in those lived experiences.

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in the United States learned of their freedom. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate Black culture, excellence, and joy. It is the longest running African-American holiday, but only adopted as a federal holiday in 2021.

Today we celebrate but we also remember that though chattel slavery is outlawed by the 13th Amendment, we still have a long way to go, especially here in Kentucky.

Did you know Kentucky was one of the last holdouts of slavery? Because it was a Union state, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply so slavery continued until December 1865. And did you know that Section 25 of the Kentucky Constitution still allows slavery? "Slavery and involuntary servitude in this state are prohibited except as punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." This must be changed.

So today I challenge you to learn more, listen more, and find a way to remind ourselves that though we may think we are free, there are still provisions that are part of our laws that allow this vile institution to live on. After all, none of us are free until we are all free.

It was just a matter of time until I was targeted by a data center hyperscaler on my position to call for a moratorium on data centers in Kentucky. I plan to work with the hyperscalers to ensure regulations can be met but the gauntlet has now been thrown. A Microsoft employee has said they have “no confidence” in my environmental principles because I’m from Kentucky. We have their attention, fellow Kentuckians, time to get louder. My DMs are open Microsoft.
