Liberty County Child Welfare Board

Liberty County Child Welfare Board We are a volunteer Board, appointed by the Liberty County Commissioners' Court.

Members volunteer their time and talents to advocate for the protection and well-being of those Liberty County children who are in the care of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) Child Protective Services Division. Our mission is to:
• Provide financial support for the special needs of children in the care of TDFPS
• Educate our community about child abuse and neglect

issues
• Support and provide a liaison between Liberty County Child Protective Services workers and the public by increasing our community's awareness of child welfare program policies and needs

Financial Assistance:
We provide financial assistance for children in substitute care (foster care, kinship care, group homes, and/or residential treatment centers) to pay for such items as clothing; extraordinary medical and dental expenses; social and educational needs. Additionally, the Board sponsors and/or assists with such regular local events as the National Adoption Day, Child Abuse Awareness, and recognition of foster children who graduate from high school. Finally, the Board provides support to local CPS staff and educates the Commissioners' Court and the Liberty County community about TDFPS policies and the needs of at-risk children. Combined, these actions by the Board augment the effectiveness of statewide and county programs for child protection.

Some volunteers give their time. Others give their hearts.

This year, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) recognized Dayton resident Cyndie Abshire for doing both, naming her a 2026 Outstanding Volunteer during Volunteer Appreciation Week.

On April 20, Cyndie received the agency's "Biggest Heart Award," an honor that reflects the compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment she brings to serving children, families, and vulnerable adults. Through countless acts of kindness and service, she has become a trusted and valued part of the DFPS community.

DFPS works to strengthen families and communities while ensuring the safety and well-being of those most in need. Volunteers like Cyndie help bring that mission to life, offering encouragement, support, and hope where it matters most.

Her impact extends far beyond the hours she volunteers. Through her caring spirit and servant's heart, Cyndie continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and in the community she proudly calls home.

We are reaching out to ask for your support in helping us amplify this important cause by sharing the event on your social media platforms. This event is being held in partnership with Harris County Resources for Children and Adults, BEAR and Republic Harley-Davidson. It is a free event, with registration limited to 75 participants.

Date: Saturday, April 11, 2026
Kickstands up: 12:00 p.m.

The ride for Safe Smiles Motorcycle Run aims to bring together cyclists, community members, organizations, and advocates who are passionate about making a difference. By increasing awareness and prevention, we can promote education and meaningful action to protect children in our communities.

We believe that together, we are called to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and to stand united in creating safer, healthier environments for our children.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Thank you David Meadows & the maintenance staff for hanging our sign at the courthouse.

Children often suffer abuse and neglect in silence, too young or scared to speak up. Learn the signs: changes in behavior, appearance, or mood could signal danger. For more info, visit DFPS – Recognize the Signs of Child Abuse. Child abuse isn't always easy to spot. If you notice something is off, don't hesitate to speak up to protect a child in need.
