Good for Smithville. Kearney, Excelsior, and Liberty should follow suit.

There has been discussion on social media suggesting the Smithville Police Department has funding in the proposed 2027 budget for Flock cameras or other Automated License Plate Reader, or ALPR, technology. I would like to clarify that information.

While this technology was discussed during the initial budget process, there are no City funds budgeted for Flock cameras or any other ALPR system in the proposed 2027 budget. The City also does not intend to use or apply for grant funds for these types of cameras in the coming year either.

While many law enforcement agencies in our surrounding area do use this type of technology, Smithville does not currently have access to their data.

We understand there are legitimate questions regarding privacy, data retention, access, and information sharing.

This foolishness is exactly why the MOLP opposed the asinine way we made it legal.

I'm not going to say don't do this to Flock cameras.

I'm also going to say that whoever is doing this is a hero.

One Flock camera was stolen Monday night at Jesse James Park in Kearney and another was chopped in half a week earlier at 19th and Nation Road.

In the most recent incident, a camera was removed from its pole, leaving behind only dangling wires.

Colleen Doctorian, public information officer for the city of Kearney, said the first incident happened days earlier.

"Last Thursday morning, one of our officers noticed the Flock camera at 19th and Nation Road was cut down and lay on the ground," Doctorian said.
