2015-The year of LEDs
LED lights and fixtures have become very popular this year. Although LED light efficiency (i.e. light output per Watt of electricity) is on par with today’s fluorescent fixtures, the LED fixture offers several advantages:
- LEDs have no Mercury. Fluorescent lamps (tubes and CFLs) require mercury.
-LEDs have Long Life. 50,000 hours for LEDs. Compare to 20,000 hours for fluorescent and about 2,000 for incandescent.
- LEDs are Instant On.
- LEDs are Dimmable.
- LEDs have a Small footprint. (Just don’t look straight at them!)
- LEDs are Flexible. LED fixtures and retrofit kits can take many forms.
Although still more expensive than traditional light sources, LED prices have been coming down, and conservation rebates may be had.
Our clients are asking us to help them with LED retrofits for all of the reasons above.
But Beware. Not all LEDs are created equal. Durability, life, light output, efficiency, and cost can vary widely.
