#community #Thankful #Thursday

This #ThankYouThursday is dedicated to Dankmeyer, Inc., a Merritt tenant for 25 years. The company serves Maryland communities and patients with essential prostheses and orthoses. "In the 65-year history of Dankmeyer, the COVID-19 pandemic may be the most significant course of events to affect our operations," they said. As an essential healthcare provider, the company expanded their practice to offer telehealth visits and immediately revised patient schedules and procedures to provide the most safe environment for clinicians working directly with patients. In addition, Dankmeyer engineered a staff-driven manufacturing facility, creating fabric face coverings to donate to clinical partners Johns Hopkins and Kennedy Krieger. They also joined a community effort to create face shield parts using 3D printers. The entire Merritt organization thanks you for your commitment and hard work during this time!

April 26- May 1st. Virtual #Advocacy week for #amputees. I have worked as an American Board Certified Prosthetist Orthotist for 14years. Legislation does affect my patient's access to custom devices that bring their BEST outcomes!

I'm starting my journey to be an #AdvocateForAll (prosthetic and orthotic) (young and old)!

I've learned the reasons behind consistent attendance to townhall meetings, correspondence, arrival to events and a personal touch goes farther.

I'm still a #CPO at #Dankmeyer with my #WCR clinic days on #Tuesday every week. I will learn from my patient cases and Build Community correspondence with our local Maryland Congressman, Delegates and Senators.

Any help is appreciated. This is #new for me!

Perhaps our cloth masks ARE valuable?!

I just read a report about all people covering their mouth & nose with fabric masks because spray/drips are not shared by a sneeze or cough. Not one droplet of virus moves into contamination.

Thus #flattening the COVID-19 curve would happen sooner than projected.

Johns Hopkins Medicine has put out a call for people to start making fabric masks to donate to the facility. "While the masks are not medical-grade and cannot be used by health care providers as protection from COVID-19 during patient-provider interactions, the products may be helpful in non-patient care settings to contain coughs and to remind people not to touch their face." In anticipation of the usefulness of these masks, Dankmeyer folks started making masks at the office three weeks ago while social distancing. Those of us in non-patient care back office roles wear the cloth masks in the office while social distancing, leaving PPE for our clinicians and those with patient interaction. I have my PPE gear on to see all patients in the Baltimore office.

So, Call the Baltimore Office 410.636.8114 to see us all covered for YOUR safety in this COVID-19 pandemic.

Our service of #prosthetics and #orthotics is an essential health benefit as defined by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA Section 1302). As these weeks of social distancing continue to help #flattenthecurve, we all know emergent surgeries from vascular, cancer, or trauma are still occurring. There are still physical changes that require external bracing to support a body part so that it's #function improves.

Please still spread HOPE in moving forward with prosthetic and orthotic treatments to bring that person into their #bestself.

Here's what #Dankmeyer is actively are doing to keep our office clean by #CDC guidelines (link below) We are asking patients showing symptoms or confirmed contact with any COVID-19 sickness to switch to Telemedicine so our office stays a sanctuary for healthy patients looking to #beActive.

This is a temperature sensitive "mood" cover that ONLY Dawn Miranda has. It is very reactive and Cool to witness!! My kids LOVE New things.

Actually- Dawn will be with me to inspire many kids at Career Day at these kids Elementary School!!

Dankmeyer recently hosted a short visit with some of our extended family - three of clinician Marlies Beerli Cabell's children came in for a visit. While Marlies was seeing a patient, the children got a close up view of Dawn Miranda's super cool new prosthesis cover. Dawn, our Prosthetist Assistant and grandmother of two, showed the kids how the warmth of their hands could make the cover change colors. Dawn says it is like a mood ring! Of course, they are too young to remember mood rings, but they thought it was pretty cool!

I was diagnosed with scoliosis in June 2018. My doctor sent me to see Marlies Cabell (Dankmeyer CPO) and I got my first Wood Cheneau Rigo (WCR) brace in September 2018. It was pretty cool because it looked like carbon fiber. I come back every couple months so we can make adjustments as I grow.

Dawn just got her first running leg last week, and she made sure that it was sparkly red! And, when she is speeding down the race course, she can think there is no place like home and be there, just like that! Dawn has a blog on our website, and we are sure that she will be telling us about her running adventures in her new running leg!

Welcome back, Michelle Forbus, as Dankmeyer's newest clinician! Michelle did part of her prosthetics and orthotics residency program with us as part of the unique prosthetics and orthotics program at Baylor in Houston, TX. The Baylor College of Medicine Orthotics and Prosthetics Program is described on their website as β€œthe only academic program in the nation in which the dual clinical residency requirements are included. Program graduates are eligible to sit for both Orthotics and Prosthetics board certification exams upon completion of their M.S. degree.” So she returns to us ready to practice and board eligible. She will be based in the Easton Office.
Originally from Crofton, Maryland, Michelle did her undergraduate work at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, majoring in Exercise Science. She is happy to return to Maryland and work close to friends and family and we are so happy to have her!

I am changing Lives.

As you work with me you will begin to hear my statement, β€œI am working to change the future for one patient at a time.” When I complete a conversation with a doctor, I think about the exchange in knowledge that will ripple through all the patient lives they touch. As an American Board Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO) for the last 12 years, I have changed lives. No Kidding! But, the insurance era of limiting access to devices is continuing to happen. I have to say to a patient, β€œI am skilled and capable to provide this device but your insurance does not acknowledge that it exists. It is not on the fee schedule or it is an exemption on your policy. Therefore unless you have money for private pay then We have to work on something different.” Wow. just sad. So, I hope to share the variety of cases, success stories and motivating outcomes that will raise awareness to my medical specialty. There are many of us American Board Certified Prosthetist Orthotist clinicians in America (found at Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics). Just perhaps you don’t need a CPO and therefore you don’t know how insurance/legislative policy is hampering the chance to CHANGE LIVES. This is real news. real life. real opportunity to get involved. What if all you took away from my page is the compassion for an amputee or custom orthotic wearer? Is there any harm in that? Be informed! Get excited! Change Lives!

Marlise has amazing dedication and resourcefulness! After other orthotists had failed to help my son with braces to help him walk, someone recommended Marlise and I’m so grateful we tried her. She worked overtime coming up with braces to help him, utilizing advanced components that were designed for adults and carefully crafting lightweight braces that could be reconfigured easily as he advance or as his therapists worked on different muscle groups. She came to multiple therapy sessions and was persevering as the team tweaked his braces to be just right. When I brought up her name to another PT she exclaimed β€œOh, I know Marlise’s work! She takes her work very personally and works as if it was her own kids she was working for.” She’s right! Thank you Marlise for all you hard work to help Sebastian walk!
