Asian American Christian Ethics rethinks perennial issues in Christian ethics (war and peace, family/marriage/parenting, gender and sexuality, economics and wealth, virtue ethics), pressing social matters (race relations, immigration, healthcare, the environment), and issues of special interest to Asian Americans (education, labor, plastic surgery) This groundbreaking volume presents the collective work of twelve Christian ethicists of Asian descent in the U.S. who map the new and burgeoning field of study located at the juncture of Christian ethics and Asian American studies. Led by Grace Kao and Ilsup Ahn, these scholars identify the purposes and chart the contours of what constitutes a distinctly Asian American Christian ethical approach to moral concerns.

This is the latest in a series of volumes, that is of chapters on specific biblical books in their ancient context, grouped mainly by genre, but also on methodological aspects of biblical studies today, including interdisciplinary perspectives and contemporary questions, such as the Bible in sociological, theological, historical, archaeological, literary, and linguistic perspectives, and the influence of concerns about gender, race, visual culture, and psychology. The concern throughout, is to encapsulate contemporary currents in interpretation, rather than to put forward the contributors' personal views, but also to suggest how biblical study may or should develop next in these areas. As with previous volumes, what is provided is a view of global scholarship as seen from these islands that will be useful to serious students of the Hebrew Bible throughout the world.

Douglas Jacobsen describes Christianity as a dynamic, worldwide faith. Highlighting Christianity's four largest traditions (Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and Pentecostalism), Global Gospel explains both the shared history and the regional distinctives of Christian faith in Africa, Asia (including the Pacific), Europe, Latin America, and North America. The text is enlivened by an abundance of maps, charts, and illustrative photos and by short primary source readings that illustrate different theological emphases on the five continents.

Speculation around the health of Paul the Apostle has been present since soon after his death. Recently scholars have understood Paul to be disabled but have been wary of isolating precisely what his disabilities may have been or whether they are important for understanding his writings. This book is the first full-length study of Paul the Apostle and disability. Using insights from contemporary disability studies, Isaac Soon analyses features of Paul's body in his ancient Mediterranean context to understand the ways in which his body was disabled. Focusing on three such ancient disabilities--demonization, circumcision, and short stature--this book draws on a rich variety of ancient evidence, from textual sources and epigraphy, to ancient visual culture, to analyze ancient bodily ideals and the negative cultural effects such 'deviant' persons generated.

Dr. Joseph Dodson of Denver Seminary has written, Paul the Rabbi Philosopher: Stoic and Jewish Philosophy in the Apostle�s Thought is an exegetical and comparative study of Paul�s letters in dialogue with first-century Jewish and philosophical texts. This work argues for understanding Paul in his diverse context, where he is both rabbi and philosopher in his presentation of the good news and instruction of obedience to Christ.

In placing Paul amid his rabbinic and philosophical conversation partners, this study provides greater understanding of Paul�s gospel and his utilization of first-century language, rhetoric, and tropes to communicate the uniqueness of Jesus Christ as cosmological Victor, the glory of his cross, and our faithful response to the gift of righteousness.

Pneumaformity fills the gap in Pauline studies by surveying Paul's letters for teachings on the Spirit's agency in the life of God' people. This study aptly demonstrates that the Holy Spirit is the instrument through whom such radical living is possible. Combining up-to-date psychological research with theological reflection, this book helps readers better understand the role that awe, pursued through the act of worship, plays in optimal psychological and spiritual functioning. Using the lens of cognitive linguistics and combining insights from trauma studies and redaction criticism, Verde explores how trauma is expressed linguistically in the book of Psalms, how trauma-related language was rooted in ancient Israel’s external realities, and how psalms helped define Yehud’s cultural trauma in the Persian period (539–331 BCE). Rather than assuming the psalmists’ personal experiences are reflected in these texts, Verde focuses on the linguistic strategies used to express trauma in the Psalms, especially references to the body and highly dramatic metaphors
