Today we honor Command Sergeant Major Mildred C. Kelly, U.S. Army.

Command Sergeant Major Kelly made history as the first Black woman Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army in 1972. Just two years later, in 1974, she became the first Black woman Command Sergeant Major at Aberdeen Proving Ground, making her the highest-ranking enlisted woman at a major Army installation with a predominantly male population.

After retiring in 1976, Command Sergeant Major Kelly continued her service by advocating for veterans, including playing a key role in the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. Her efforts helped establish the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, which honors women’s contributions to the military.

Command Sergeant Major Kelly also served on the Maryland Veterans Commission, the Veterans Advisory Board, and as past president of Chapter 16 of the WAC Veterans Association. She passed away from cancer in 2003 and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of trailblazing leadership and advocacy for women in the military.
