Pack the Caldwell County Courthouse This Thursday!
Good evening, Caldwell County!
On Thursday morning, the Caldwell County Commissioners Court will be voting on a polling location plan for the upcoming November election. The Republican majority on the County Election Board (CEB) has been pushing to eliminate 25% of polling locations, from 16 down to 12. We're hearing they may try to push for a "compromise" to go from 16 down to 14. In any case, the only acceptable outcome is remaining at 16 locations.
We had 19 polling locations in 2022 and 16 in 2024. And yet, Caldwell County is the 9th fastest growing county in the country! We can't allow schemes that suppress the vote, whether its in East Lockhart, Luling, Fentress, or anywhere.
There have been a litany of excuses pushed by the Republicans on the CEB, but none of them are any good. We have enough polling equipment to run 16 locations. If we somehow didn't, the County has time to procure new or rent equipment. Crucially, a "lack of backup polling equipment" is not a legally permissible justification for "combining" polling locations.
The law is very clear that only the following conditions matter when it comes to combining polling locations:
1.) That there are no viable polling locations in a particular precinct, and that a search for alternatives has been exhaustive.
2.) That combining locations would "serve the voters".
3.) That combining locations would not harm protected voters under the Voting Rights Act.
To date, there has been no documentation put forward showing that an exhaustive search has taken place for alternative locations. In fact, alternative locations have been identified in each of the precincts marked for closure! The current plan would NOT serve the voters. Any plan to close the polling location in Precinct 401 would harm voters in East Lockhart, a majority-minority neighborhood protected under the Voting Rights Act.
The Republican scheme to close polling locations, as currently presented, appears to be ILLEGAL on its face.
The County cannot use a so-called "lack of backup polling equipment" as an excuse. And if a lawsuit were to be filed, it would certainly be more expensive than buying a few poll books.
We urge everyone in the community to show up at the County Courthouse this Thursday at 9AM to demand there be NO polling location closures!
