Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the signing of BTECH Now, USU Next… An exciting new collaboration between Bridgerland Technical College and Utah State University!

This partnership creates a more seamless pathway for students to begin with hands-on, career-focused education at BTECH and, if they choose, continue their education at USU. With clearer credit pathways, advising, direct admission opportunities, and greater connection between the two institutions, we are removing barriers and opening doors for students.

I’m excited to see this kind of work happening across education in Utah, stronger connections between our secondary schools, technical colleges, and universities.

Education doesn’t have to follow one path.

For some students, the right first step is a university. For others, it’s a technical college, an industry credential, or a career focused program while still in high school. What matters is that we create pathways that allow students to keep moving forward.

Meet students where they are, and help them get where they have the potential to go. That’s what creating more opportunities for students looks like, and I’m excited to see where this partnership leads.

Jim Laub has seen Utah State grow and change over the years, and his family has been part of that story for generations.

He remembers a much simpler version of USU athletics, before many of the facilities, upgrades, and bells and whistles we know today. Hearing him reflect on those early days made today’s announcement even more meaningful.

Beginning January 1, 2027, Maverik Stadium will officially become the Jim Laub Family Stadium, honoring a family whose support for Utah State and Cache Valley has left a lasting impact.

It was special to hear Jim look back on where it all started and how far Utah State has come.

This afternoon, I was honored to attend an historic press conference at Utah State University. As a long-time resident of Cache Valley, I have witnessed the Laub family’s generous giving and absolute love and admiration for our community, schools, and USU athletics. The renaming of the stadium in their honor could not be more fitting. I also want to thank Maverik for nearly 11 years of support for USU athletics. Their contributions have helped USU in many ways and we will always be thankful for their support. Go Aggies!

More training. More high-skill careers. More opportunity right here in Northern Utah.

The partnership between Brigham City, Utah State University, and Hi-Tech Solutions is about creating stronger pathways for students and workers to gain real-world skills, earn credentials, and connect directly with careers in nuclear energy and advanced technology.

This is the kind of investment that helps keep talent here, strengthens our workforce, and creates opportunities that can benefit Utah for years to come.

On Monday, Brigham City, Utah State University, and Hi-Tech Solutions signed an agreement to work together on a place where students and workers can train, earn credentials, conduct applied research, and connect directly with careers in nuclear energy and advanced technology.

What a huge step for Utah! This is one of the ways we plan to continue building a stronger workforce, creating more opportunity close to home, and preparing Northern Utah for what comes next.

During my time as mayor, I saw the same pattern again and again. An issue could generate hundreds of comments online, while only a handful of people would actually come to the meeting.

The people serving on boards, volunteering, coaching, organizing cleanups and helping solve community problems were often the same familiar faces.

Tocqueville understood why that matters.

He believed America’s strength came not only from our Constitution, but from citizens who had developed the habit of governing themselves. People formed associations, served their neighbors, worked through disagreements and took responsibility for problems before assuming someone else would solve them.

Those habits are part of what make self-government possible.

We cannot become a country of spectators who only enter public life when we are angry about the outcome.

Attend the meeting before there is a crisis. Serve on the board. Volunteer. Get to know the people making decisions in your community. Stay long enough to hear someone you disagree with.

A republic does not sustain itself simply because we hold elections.

It survives because ordinary people continue practicing citizenship between them.

Happy National Park Week!

I’ll admit I’m a little biased…. I think Utah is home to some of the most incredible national parks in the country. But wherever you live, our national parks are American treasures worth protecting, exploring and passing on to the next generation.

This Tuesday also marks the 110th birthday of the National Park Service. To celebrate, entrance fees will be waived for U.S. citizens and residents at national parks across the country.

So get outside this next week! Take your family, find a trail and enjoy some of the places that make this country so remarkable.

And if you’re heading to a park, let me know which one.
