The Republican Party Was Born. 172 years ago today, in Ripon, Wisconsin, Americans who refused to stand silent on the issue of slavery came together to form a new party, the Republican Party. Born out of conviction and a belief in liberty, the GOP went on to elect Abraham Lincoln, win the Civil War, and pass the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, abolishing slavery and securing equal rights for all Americans. From our founding to today, Republicans have always stood for freedom.
