Pour yourself a cup of ambition, it’s Dolly Parton Day! ☕️✨

Following Dolly Parton’s passing, the CD4 office was moved to honor the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. On August 26, we convened every woman on the City Council and introduced a resolution recognizing September 25 — or 9/25 — as Dolly Parton Day in the City of Los Angeles.

A special piece of LA history: Mayor Tom Bradley officially declared September 20, 1979 the first “Dolly Parton Day” in Los Angeles. This framed photo is from that day, of Dolly with former CD4 Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

Dolly was so much more than the “Queen of Country.” Across seven decades, she became one of America’s most celebrated artists while breaking barriers for women in entertainment, championing dignity and equality, supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and giving generously to causes close to her heart.

It is an extraordinary honor to recognize an icon whose music, songwriting, humor, advocacy, philanthropy, and unmistakable spirit touched generations. Dolly’s contributions reached far beyond the stage, leaving an indelible mark on Los Angeles, our country, and the world.

Dolly will always be missed, and we will always love her!

Nine years ago, former Councilmember Paul Koretz spearheaded an annual Council tradition: pausing each September to recognize Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the organization leading the fight against it — The Ovarian Cancer Circle, Inspired by Robin Babbini. I’ve been honored to carry the torch on this presentation for the past few years, and last Friday, joined by founder Paulinda Schimmel and an extraordinary community of survivors, I was proud to once again recognize The Circle and Paulinda’s tireless fight for a cure.

Twenty years ago, Paulinda lost her daughter Robin to ovarian cancer. Robin was just 20 years old, a college freshman with her whole life ahead of her. Her pain was initially dismissed, and by the time her cancer was diagnosed, it had already advanced.

Paulinda chose to turn that unimaginable loss into purpose. In 2010, she founded The Ovarian Cancer Circle in Robin’s memory. Since then, the organization has raised and directed more than $1.5 million toward gynecologic oncology research at UCLA Health — while building a powerful community of doctors, researchers, survivors, and advocates committed to changing the way we understand and fight this disease.

Thank you to Paulinda and The Ovarian Cancer Circle for turning grief into action, investing in research, raising awareness, and standing alongside women and families facing ovarian cancer — a disease that takes far too many lives while receiving far too little attention.

Your work keeps hope alive — not just each September, but every day.

One last splash before the end of summer! ☀️💦

Neighbors from across CD4 came together at VNSO Aquatics Center over Labor Day weekend for an afternoon of swimming, games, food, and fun — and the perfect send-off to summer.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the VNSO Aquatics Team, Department of Recreation & Parks, PlayLA, and Citywide Aquatics for helping make the day possible.

We’ll see you around the district at more CD4 community events this fall! 🌴

👀 Here’s a first look behind the scenes at the making of P-22’s memorial — and the next chapter of his extraordinary legacy!

After receiving an incredible number of submissions through our public call for artists, Los Angeles sculptor Adam Matano was selected to bring P-22’s story to life. His sculpture, Earth to City: Rhapsody of the Wild King — which captures P-22 bridging both the natural and man-made world while navigating the space between — is a beautiful ode to the improbable life led by our beloved mountain lion.

The sculpture’s clay form is now complete after months of meticulous work, and will soon head to the foundry, where it will be cast in bronze before making its permanent home at the Griffith Park Visitors Center!

P-22 captured the imagination of this city, always reminding us that even in the middle of a sprawling metropolis, the wild is never far away.

Joined by his family, friends, and sons carrying on his legacy, I was honored to adjourn Friday’s Council Meeting in memory of venerable chef and culinary tastemaker Katsuya Uechi, who passed away on June 24.

Katsuya was a visionary who helped shape Los Angeles’ culinary landscape, bringing together Japanese tradition, innovation, and an unmistakable creative spirit. His influence extended far beyond the kitchen, and his work has helped make Los Angeles a dynamic and internationally celebrated food city.

Born in Okinawa, Katsuya came to the United States in 1984 with a dream of one day opening his own restaurant. Thirteen years later, he opened the first Sushi Katsu-ya on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City — a place we treasure as part of CD4!

His creations, including the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna we all know and love, have become icons of modern Japanese cuisine, inspiring chefs and diners in Los Angeles and all over the world.

But beyond his dedication to creating exceptional food, Chef Katsuya believed in investing in people. He mentored generations of chefs, co-founded the Miyako Sushi & Washoku School, and treated the people who worked alongside him as family.

As his son, Kotaro Uechi shared, “No matter how successful he became, the City of LA was never just a place where my father did business, but it was a place he called home.”

On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, colleagues, and the many Angelenos whose lives he touched. We are grateful for his extraordinary contributions to our city and for the legacy he leaves behind.

On Wednesday, August 26th, a fire burned at an abandoned private property in Studio City. This fire caused smoke and fire damage to a neighboring home we visited this morning.

It is absolutely inexcusable that residents on Babcock Avenue have been living next to this abandoned, unsecured private property for years. My office has repeatedly begged LADBS to secure and clean up this site — for years — to no avail.

We have called, we have emailed, we have escalated. We have used every avenue to sound the alarm and nothing was done. We also flagged this property directly to the Mayor’s Office in November — 10 months ago now. This property should have been proactively secured and abated long before a fire made the danger impossible to ignore.

And the reality is that for every nuisance property story you hear about today, there are hundreds across the city impacting neighbors daily.

We have and will continue to escalate nuisance abatement issues on behalf of our constituents. We are glad the Mayor is finally answering the call.

Making our streets safer, one intersection at a time.

After the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council alerted our office in November 2025 to the need for a marked crosswalk at Sunset Drive and Bates Street, particularly to help protect children walking to school, we worked closely with LADOT to get one installed.

LADOT initially determined that the intersection was already a safe and legal pedestrian crossing, but our Field Team pressed for a closer look. Following a reassessment, LADOT determined that the intersection met the criteria for a marked crosswalk, and work was completed August 10th — just in time for the start of the school year!

Thank you to our incredible CD4 Field Team for continuing to problem-solve, push for solutions, and make our streets safer for our communities.

Los Angeles is a city built by artists, and Council District 4 is at the heart of that creative legacy!

In recent years, this community has weathered real hardships — from the pandemic to disruptions in film and TV, to devastating wildfires. Our artists deserve more than our sympathy, they deserve real and meaningful investment. Earlier this year, I worked with the Department of Cultural Affairs to put $300,000 directly into the hands of the dancers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists who make Council District 4 and this City so extraordinary.

Funded through the City’s Arts Development Fee, the 43 grantees spanned dance, theater, music, film, photography, visual art and more. As a condition of their grants, these artists participated in emergency preparedness workshops led by DCA, 18th Street Arts Center, and National Coalition for Arts Preparedness and Emergency Response (NCAPER) to develop plans to protect their work and cultural assets when emergencies strike.

I want this to be a city where artists can put down roots, build their careers, and thrive, because when we invest in our creative industries, we’re investing in the soul of Los Angeles.
