While I was unconscious after losing our baby, my husband secretly approved a surgery that stole my chance to ever become a mother again. Then his pregnant mistress walked into my hospital room smiling, and he called her unborn child "the Harlan heir." They thought I knew nothing. They were wrong.
"After my wife falls asleep again, remove her uterus. I never want her to have the chance to become pregnant ever again."
I heard those words drifting through the hospital corridor while I still wore my open hospital gown, my knees unsteady, my entire body shaking after losing my baby. The voice belonged to my husband, Jared Harlan, the same man who had promised he would protect me no matter what happened in the world.
I stood frozen behind a partially open door.
The doctor remained silent.
Jared dropped his voice, though not quietly enough.
"Invent a diagnosis. Can/cer, permanent damage, whatever works. Just make it happen. And don't let Shelby find out."
Shelby was my name.
A moment later, Courtney Briggs arrived, a social media influencer employed by Harlan Media, the company my husband owned. She wore a tailored white dress, one hand resting lightly over the small curve of her pregnancy. Jared slipped an arm around her with a tenderness that no longer belonged to me.
"Give her the finest prenatal treatment available," he said. "That child will carry on the Harlan family name."
The floor seemed to vanish beneath me.
I didn't weep.
I didn't even shout.
Instead, I quietly walked back to my hospital room carrying a chill inside me that even I barely recognized.
On the bedside table rested the bouquet Jared had delivered earlier, white roses beside a handwritten note that said:
"You and I against the world, my love."
The sight nearly made me sick.
A young nurse entered with a cheerful smile, completely unaware that I had just overheard my own fate.
"Mrs. Harlan, you're incredibly fortunate. Mr. Harlan booked this entire floor just for you. He hasn't stepped away from your bedside once. When you lost the baby, he cried like a little boy. Honestly, not many women are blessed with a husband like yours."
I kept my eyes fixed on the window.
Beyond the glass, the city moved on exactly as it always had, completely unconcerned while my marriage quietly bled out.
Only minutes later, Jared hurried into the room.
The instant he noticed I was awake, he rushed over and gathered me tightly into his embrace.
"Where did you go? I was terrified. I thought something terrible had happened to you."
His panic seemed genuine.
That was what made it so unbearable.
He offered me a cup containing a dark-colored medicine.
"Drink this, sweetheart. It'll help your body heal. We can always try again."
Try again.
Those two words sliced through me like a blade.
"I don't want it," I answered.
For the briefest moment, his expression turned cold.
"Shelby, don't be difficult. You've always dreamed of giving me a child."
I grabbed the cup from his hand and flung it against the wall. The dark liquid spread across the spotless floor like spilled ink.
"I said no."
Jared inhaled deeply before looking toward the nurse.
"Give us a moment alone."
The last thing I remembered was the sharp prick in my arm.
The room tilted.
His features became hazy.
Then everything disappeared into darkness.
When I opened my eyes again, morning had arrived.
The ache in my abdomen felt unfamiliar. Heavier. Hollower.
My hands shook as I pulled back the blanket and found a fresh surgical incision stretching across my stomach.
Jared sat beside the bed, his eyes swollen and filled with tears.
"Honey, there were complications. They discovered can:cerous cells in your uterus. I had no choice but to approve the operation to save your life."
He placed a sealed medical file into my hands.
Every document appeared legitimate.
Every detail seemed flawless.
But I already knew the truth.
Just then, the door swung open.
Courtney entered carrying a basket of fruit, smiling as if she had come to celebrate with family.
"Sorry for interrupting. I wanted to check on Mrs. Harlan."
Jared never told her to leave.
He merely tightened his grip around my hand.
And beneath the blanket, while pretending to comfort me, his fingers quivered because they wished they were touching her instead.
That was the instant I understood that the greatest loss wasn't my uterus.
It was realizing the person who was destr0ying my life had been sleeping beside me every single night.
And he still had absolutely no idea what I was preparing to do next.
