STATEMENT REGARDING GUN VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY
Politicians, use your God given common sense. Do the right thing and fight for our children!
When is enough, enough? No parents, grandparent or family should ever suffer the pain and grief from the loss of a child, grandchild or sibling. Politicians, we need more than your hope and prayers, your public mourning, your political rhetoric about gun control.
We have a duty to protect our children from senseless gun violence.
After every mass shooting, the killer wins and we lose! With every killing of innocent children at schools, retail and grocery stores, worshippers in churches, temples, and mosques, America loses another vital blood vessel that carries life sustaining blood to our heart.
I am a man of strong faith, and I believe in hope and prayer, but frankly (truly) I am sick and tired of hearing politicians on both sides of the political spectrum parade up in front of microphones reciting these axioms after another mass lynching or gunshot murders.
Politicians utter statements about hope and prayer on one side and gun control on the other side and taking a moment of silence on both sides without doing anything meaningful to stop gun violence. I say throw all the rascals out.
While I believe in the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms, I also believe that we need to take prudent actions to screen out the mentally ill and criminals from having easy legal access to military style weapons. Guns alone do not cause mayhem, deranged people do.
What about our rights or the rights of children to grow up to be adults? As parents, grandparents, or older siblings, we have a right to expect our children we dropped off at school to be safe until we return to pick them up.
The USA has over 320 million people, but Americans owns 400 million guns. Where in the Constitution does it say that reasonable gun background checks are a breach of our 2nd amendment?
I disagree with those who would ban sworn armed public safety officers from being allowed to be present on school campuses. I also disagree with those who would allow the gun lobby to hogtie politicians from doing the right thing in passing common sense gun licensing laws when 75% of Americans want reasonable background checks.
There needs to be an intersection of common sense between private citizens having the right to bear arms and sworn public safety officers having the ability to be stationed on our school campuses to keep our children safe.
Voters have a right and duty to demand common sensical policies, procedures and laws that the overwhelming majority of Americans want. As mayor of Los Angeles, the second largest city in America, I will stand up and scream to the top of my voice and rally with Angelenos who want to hold politicians accountable on both sides of the aisle and demand that we do everything in our power to protect our children and innocent people from gun violence.
The next time I hear politicians talk about hope and prayer, gun control or let’s take a moment of silence, I'm going to puke. How many more, LA voters? LA Voters, you have a choice to vote for a mayor who will stand up and speak truth and bring people together to solve our complex problems.
