It’s about leaving something better for our kids. That’s how we’ve always moved this country forward, by all of us coming together on behalf of our children, folks who volunteer to coach that team, to teach that Sunday school class, because they know it takes a village.” ― Michelle Obama, 2016

Asante Blackk

Wow, this is amazing! YOUNG, Black and Gifted people using their voice to share their stories, perspective and thoughts on the current climate and culture.

Welcome to the first episode of The Speak Up Series. We are super excited to welcome the uberly talented Storm Reid, Niles Fitch and Lexi Underwood. We get into it talking about the feeling of belonging in the Black identity, the role of the Black woman in society, and the importance of mental health for the Black community.

Each episode we will be selecting a charity to support based on the conversation’s subject matter. The first episode is dedicated to supporting Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old EMT fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers while asleep in her home. If you would like to donate to her fund, we’ve included a link to do so here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/9v4q2-justice-for-breonna-taylor

Staff and our participants would like to thank @rastafribraid for their donation!

“Our hair is our crown: a source of strength and a symbol of the creativity that we show to the world. Braiding wasn’t just a hairstyle in ancient Africa, to Black slaves or even to women in the African diaspora today. We quite literally use our braids to communicate with the world.”

05/30/2020

The world continues to adjust and adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the anxiety, depression, and vicarious trauma associated with the epidemic of racism impacting those who share the same ethnic and socio-cultural identity endures past seasons.

The distressing images and viral videos that have captured the souls of African Americans continue to trigger intergenerational traumas of discrimination, systematic, or systemic oppression. The intensity of anger and its subsequent rage reaction in response to the fate of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breona Taylor, and the many names that are known and unknown continue to plague our communities.

These represent the uncertainties of living in an aggressive environment, feeling unsafe, and reinforces a mistrust in some of the people in certain systems that are designed to protect, provide aid, and support.

These memorable faces heighten our protectiveness of our parents, uncles, siblings, children, cousins, friends, and ourselves. For many this can only foster reactions of despair and hopelessness, but what can we do now?

It is a time to grieve. It is a time to sit with anger, pause, and think deeply about how our hands, talents, and resources can be used to educate, empower, and reform systems to protect the marginalized. The intense feelings are real, the pain is validated, but our reactions must be conducive to protect the vulnerable.

Speak clearly about your feelings, write in your journal honestly, allow the tears to flow, and while your heart still aches, firmly decide how you will impact significant change. You are never alone in this, we are hurting together. -Gail White-Biggers

For this Memorial Day, we honor the essential workers on the frontlines that lost their lives to COVID-19. With the death toll nearing a hundred thousand in our nation, we acknowledge the names we know and those we do not who succumbed to virus.

May we continue to practice social distancing and celebrate this holiday at home with our loved ones to flatten the curve and heal our land soon.
