Today, Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to officers of the US Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department for defending the Capitol and all of us working in it during the Jan 6 insurrection.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, in which we honor those who have been murdered for nothing more than expressing their true identity.

The horrific shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado last night that took the lives of 5 people, is a devastating reminder that transphobia and violence against the LGTBQ community is an evil that endangers far too many in this country.

Today, the Senate advanced one step closer to passing the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill which would protect same s*x marriages under federal law. This would be a massive win for the LGTBQ+ community and guarantee Americans’ right to marry who they love, regardless of s*xual orientation. We must continue to fight to make sure this bill is signed into law.

Today, the House passed the Speak Out Act, to ensure that the survivors of s*xual misconduct in the workplace cannot be silenced by non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). This bill will help protect and empower survivors and stop the culture of silence and cover ups.

For over 15 years I have been hosting Clinic Roundtables to bring together the providers in my district to discuss the health issues that affect both our nation and their facilities. Since we began these roundtables in 2006, these clinic roundtables have created a more collaborative and coordinated lens through which to evaluate health care in my congressional district.

I hosted this final Roundtable to thank the wonderful health clinics in my district and introduce them to their new Representative. I thank Congressman-elect, Robert Garcia, for joining me and taking the time to learn about the issues currently affecting our health clinics. I also commend the clinic executives and their amazing staff for their phenomenal leadership and for providing invaluable healthcare services to members of our community. It has truly been a privilege to represent all of you in Congress these past 30 years and I thank you for helping me to be a better legislator.

As a proud partner of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, I am honored to pay my respect to the more than 9 million Vietnam era veterans throughout our nation, both living and deceased. I thank the City Commerce for allowing me to honor these valiant Vietnam veterans from my district with a beautiful Vietnam Veterans Lapel Pin.

Thanks to the brave men and women that served in the Vietnam War, we now vow to never confuse personal disapproval of war with prejudice against those who honorably wear the uniform of our Armed Forces.
