Parents here is some information about the Messenger Kids App.
Yesterday Messenger kids was finally launched in Australia and many other countries after being around since 2017. There were some early criticisms of the app (most of which they addressed and made changes to) as well as criticism about data breaches, and getting kids on board with Facebook before their time (the app is supposed to be for 6-12 year olds to connect with others). As times are different now in terms of the online being the only way for kids to connect right now it should however be a pretty safe option to connect as you, as the parent, get notified about who they are talking to, you can view the chats, photos and videos and you have the ability to log them out via your own device. If you are concerned about data breaches and the information they are collecting about your 6 year old then that may deter you. Facebook does state however that the app collects information not for 3rd party or advertising but only for the purpose of operating the app. All in all I think it can be a safe way for kids to connect, even if its just something you use during these times. I have written a more comprehensive look at this app and some of the other ways young people are connecting online in this lates blog post.
