EOW: Deputy David Holguin
September 5, 1984

Deputy Sheriff David Holguin was shot and killed while assisting a young child who was alone at a bus stop at 3:00 am.

Deputy Holguin had just finished his shift and was heading home when he saw the boy by himself at the intersection of Florence and Vinevale Avenues in Bell City. He stopped and called the Bell Police Department, identified himself as an officer, and waited with the boy until local police arrived.

As he waited for responding officers, the boy's father arrived, and Deputy Holguin began to admonish him. A passerby saw the argument and approached the two men, not realizing that Deputy Holguin was a law enforcement officer because he was in plain clothes and not displaying a badge. When the passerby attempted to intervene in the argument, he saw Deputy Holguin's firearm and opened fire, fatally wounding him.

The citizen who shot Deputy Hoguin was arrested, convicted of second-degree murder, and sentenced to 15 years.

Deputy Sheriff Holguin had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for one year. He is survived by his mother and two sisters.

We remember his sacrifice by wearing a black tie and band over our badge.

When you see emergency lights and hear sirens, slow down and safely move to the right to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Every second matters when deputies,

8•24 A Legacy Bigger Than Basketball. 🏀

On Mamba Day, we remember Kobe Bryant - not only for the numbers on his jersey, but for his determination, discipline, and commitment to community.

At Century Station, we share those same values with the communities we serve - building relationships, creating positive moments, and meeting one another beyond the badge.

Today we honor a Los Angeles icon, whose impact continues to inspire generations. 💛💜

In Memory of DEPUTY RONALD LUDLOW
EOW: Friday, August 13, 1965

Deputy Ronald Ludlow was shot and killed
during the Watts Riots in Los Angeles. He and other deputies were at the intersection of Wilmington Avenue and Imperial Highway attempting to disperse a crowd from a liquor store that had been looted and set on fire. Shots were fired at the deputies as they attempted to protect the store. A car pulled up to the store and another deputy pointed his shotgun at the vehicle while ordering the car to leave the area. One of the men in the vehicle grabbed the barrel of the shotgun and during the struggle, the weapon discharged hitting Deputy Ludlow in the stomach.

Deputy Ludlow was placed in a patrol car and died while being transported to a local hospital. Deputy Ludlow was the first fatality of the Watts Riots. As a
result of the riots, the Los Angeles Police Department formed the world's first modern-day SWAT team. The man who murdered him was convicted of murder but was subsequently acquitted after appealing the conviction.

Deputy Ludlow had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for just shy of four years. He was survived by his wife and three children. We honor his sacrifice by wearing a black tie and memorial band.
