The ACLU is the nation’s foremost advocate for individual liberty and equality, and its leading guardian against unwarranted government interference and abuse. With the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights as our guide, we’ve been at the forefront of every major civil-rights battle in this country for more than 90 years. For each new generation of Americans, the ACLU – using lobbying, litigation and education — defends freedom and civil rights against threats both old and new. The ACLU of Southern California is one of the oldest, largest, and most progressive ACLU affiliates in the nation. Founded by famed author Upton Sinclair in 1923, we’ve never wavered in pursuing liberty, equal rights and economic justice for all.

As we approach the 47th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, we have much to be proud of in California. California law makes clear that every person has the right to use facilities that match their gender identity.

Year after year, joining a gym is at the top of New Year's resolution lists. Orange County homelessness: Growing pains in creating emergency shelters and the search for long term solutions

"It is the most traumatic environment I could ever imagine being in..." Callie, an #OrangeCounty resident, describes what it's like to stay at a homeless shelter.

In order to effectively & humanely address homelessness, we must prioritize a #HousingFirst approach.

A judge ruled that Orange County cannot arrest people for sleeping in public spaces if there are no alternatives. So the county has been creating shelters out of bus stations, motels and warehouses. But reports of conditions in them are not good.

Congress: Impeach Donald Trump

The #ACLU has tried – from day one of this administration – to stop the president from turning his racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and hateful LGBTQ bias into unconstitutional policy.

We've taken more than 240 legal actions against the president and his administration – from the Muslim ban to forced family separations to the transgender military ban.

But a line has been crossed and more is required, so we've decided to speak out and call for impeachment by the House and a full, fair, and open trial in the Senate. #NobodyIsAboveTheLaw #ImpeachmentEve

Trump has violated his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, and has obstructed justice. Join us and urge Congress to impeach Trump. Nobody is above the law.

Costs of Injustice: How Criminal System Fees Are Hurting Los Angeles County Families

L.A. County keeps people trapped in debt years after they served their time by charging thousands in criminal system administrative fees.

We have the power to end these policies that fuel the cycle of mass incarceration, poverty, & homelessness.

Los Angeles County has a responsibility to ensure that all its community members, whether rich or poor, receive equal justice and a fair chance to succeed. However, by using the criminal system to extract fees and fines from low-income communities of color, the county is doing the opposite.

They did not turn their backs on our country in its time of need; we must not turn our backs on them. #VeteransDay #DeportedVeterans

Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles

We filed a lawsuit on behalf of families who’ve lost loved ones at the hands of Los Angeles sheriff deputies — they are seeking records relating to these deaths, records they are entitled to under CA’s Right to Know Act #SB1421.

When they went to the Hall of Justice to serve Sheriff Villanueva with the lawsuit, they were denied access to a building open to the public and threatened with arrest for “forced entry.” #CheckTheSheriff

Sheriff Villanueva has refused to comply with the law and produce documents related to the murders of those killed by LA County Sheriffs. On October 30th the families, supported by BLMLA, Centro CSO, the ACLU and others attempted to serve him a lawsuit and were LOCKED OUT of a public building...the Hall of (In)Justice during business hours, then threatened with arrest.

LAPD will drastically cut back on pulling over random vehicles over racial bias concerns

In response to data proving what Black & Latino folks in L.A. already know — that the police are stopping them at a disproportionate rate — LAPD Chief Michael Moore announced that the Metro division will decrease vehicle stops.

We're glad Chief Moore is paying attention, but LAPD needs to take concrete steps, like disciplinary action for officers who engage in racial profiling, to end pretextual traffic stops and the way they are used to uphold racist policing.

More information on PUSH LA's list of demands: https://pushla.org/

After a Times investigation raises racial bias concerns, the LAPD will drastically cut back on its practice of stopping vehicles at random.

WHEN, not if #putinsGOP begins stealing my Social Security, the money I worked for and entrusted the USA to invest wisely for me, I would like the ACLU to file a class-action suit on my behalf and on the behalf of every other American that will suffer a loss regardless of their race, color, creed, sexual preference, or political affiliation because of this scheme. I am asking for a full refund of my part of the money that had been taken from my paycheck for over 50 years due to a breach of my trust in the government. I don't really care if I get the portion my employers kicked in even though that too is rightfully mine. I think this would be the largest class-action suit in the history of the USA. I live in SoCAL and I would be more than happy to contribute whatever money I can spare to help in this cause. If you feel the same way, show the ACLU you would like to see this happen by reacting to this post.

Start passing laws that help protect everybody (police, fire, working citizens) from the dangers you created by letting the homeless have the "right" to live freely and lawless in the streets.
Thank you so much we're taking the time to read my son story. On July 11th 2019 my son was going grocery shopping. When he was approached by three bikers and was beaten and defended himself and unfortunately killed one of them. The night of the incident the sheriff of Twin Peaks that watch the video determined it was self-defense and let him go then after a month went by the two remaining bikers went down the hill and spoke to the detective Ogaz, and lie through their teeth after 21 days being able to collaborate their story of Pure Lies. Unfortunately the detective believed these ex-felons who one of them has over twenty two cases against him two felonies and two open Assault cases pending. They arrested my son and he's been locked up for 5 months. I do not have money so I have a public defender. I would not be contacting anyone if we had the full video to prove my son's innocence. But not once but three times they gave us a set of cut up videos with the most crucial part missing the part that would exonerate my son the part of the beating. This is why I contacted Brendan Sullivan and he referred me to Matthew Umhoefer who used to be a federal prosecutor and has a Los Angeles office. They are overseeing the case because I sent them all the proof and they told me not to take the plea bargain because my son is innocent and what they did is called prosecutorial misconduct tampering with evidence. We do not know who cut up the film. public defender saying he can't use this because he cannot prove who cut up the film. I say doesn't matter who cut up the film it's unacceptable for the prosecutor to try to prosecute my son with evidence has been tampered with and two witnesses that are non credible. my son is on disabilities 27 years old he has a plate in his head and has been diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety disorder also memory loss. I believe his constitutional rights are being broken because of the tampering with the video and taking out parts that would exonerate him. my name is Patty Poulsen and my son's name is Alex Opmanis. We live in Lake Arrowhead and this happened in Crestline California San Bernardino County he is in the Glen Helen jail. They have them in protective area because of all the ongoing threats from these bikers that they're going to kill him inside the jail. I have all the evidence in hand of both sets of videos that are all cut up. I have all the testimonies and pretty much everything the prosecution have.. My phone number is a home phone number 909-485-1149. This is the worst case I've ever seen of Injustice this is not my America and because of my son's case I'm learning this happens more than it should. His next court date is next week on the 16th in San Bernardino Courthouse I was hoping to get somebody there to film so that the prosecution knows they're being watched before it's too late like Ryan Ferguson I don't want to wait 10 years, my son does not deserve this. Thank you so much for your interest I hope you can help me to save my son's life he's a gentle giant a very good-looking gentle giant and I miss him so much I know God is good and he will send the people that I need in my life to save him. Thank you so much for your time I hope to hear from you soon. And please let me know that you received this email thank you again
This is happening in Kern County, DA Cynthia Zimmer has been investigated for prosecuting people in retaliation for supporting her political opponents. I was charged with obscure ‘eavesdropping’ PC 632. My attorney was prohibited by court during my trial to cite PC 69 and PC 148 which specifically deals with recording the police and explicitly affirms the right of all Californians to record the police “in any public place or a place I have a right to be in” without there consent or knowledge. During the trial the police admitted to using Facebook to spy on its critics in both the city of Tehachapi and in neighboring towns. The people in my city are afraid speak up and stopped attending city council meetings because of a heavy police presence and fear of retribution.

I say what I think needs to happen I think the California governor needs to ban the federal government before the sun goes down today because the federal government it's not only unconstitutional they're supposed to have the least power and they have the most the people today don't know or understand the Constitution for instance Kansas City Missouri the state of Missouri has a law that states if any federal government comes into that state and tries to take anyone's guns or make a law did that agent will be arrested and fully prosecuted I think that the people and Missouri know and understand the Constitution very well why don't we the people here in California know that so I say that our governor of California just like all the other Governors and all the other states except for Missouri need to get the balls tube and the federal government and if he cannot do it he needs to be removed from office because he's not only taking his wages under false pretense violating each and every person's constitutional rights in California then me I I'm ready to run for governor of California because I will ban the federal government that's been screwing the people for how long now
It’s ironic that the party that supports a proven serial adulterer, documented chronic liar, multiple divorcee, bully who has mocked a disabled person, a 16 year old girl, brags about being entitled to be able to grab women by the pussy, makes fun of women he considers ugly, calls a highly respected POW a coward, encages kids separating them from their parents, is found guilty and fined $2 million for stealing from his charitable Foundation, disrespects a Gold Star Family while avoiding the draft himself is considered by some to be a role model is a travesty. Their hypocrisy is why so many young people are turned off by the Church.
