Barnett “Buster” Eliott Sussman 1927-2020
April 17, 2020, one day after successfully attaining his 93rd birthday, the charming nonagenarian known as “Buster”, passed peacefully while holding his niece’s hand, in Camarillo, California.
As a babe, Buster received his sobriquet as a result of the effect he had on his parents’ sleep. His full and rich life included a youth in the communities of San Francisco, Pasadena, and Healdsburg. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Brazil. After earning his BA in Journalism at USC in 1949, his colorful career path began at the Oakdale Enterprise and he continued writing for other papers including, the San Francisco Examiner, the Los Angeles Examiner, the Daily Breeze, the LA Times, and the Metropolitan News (a daily legal newspaper, where his Judge Peppercorn column was a particularly creative outlet.)
Participating broadly in the community, Buster served for many years on the board of the LA Press Club directing their educational foundation. Additionally, he was a member and served on the board of the Black Journalist Association, and was Vice President of the Filipino Press Club. As a consultant in public relations and advertising, Buster worked for various colleges and universities, for the US, and for several countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. He served for 12 years on the board of the Lotus Festival as Media Advisor. As you might imagine, he specialized in connecting people and took joy in intercultural networking and encouraging people to work together for the common good. He was an idea man.
Buster was perpetually producing. Always a prolific multimedia artist, his painting and drawings focused on stylized faces. Anything and everything were utilized as a canvas from clothing, shoes, and hats, to bits of old envelopes and found furniture! He wrote romantic plays for seniors, and was last working on a science fiction novel. Buster enjoyed family life and travel with the love of his life, Gertrude. He helped raise two children, and encouraged the artistic and intellectual pursuits of his nieces, nephew, and grandchildren.
Buster’s generosity, upbeat personality and tendency to lift the spirits of others are legend, winning him numerous friends and admirers. “Congratulations”, “Very good, very good”, “flawless”, “perfect”, and “lavish” were some favorite Busterisms. His stylish goatee, roundish glasses, and distinctive hats were memorable.
Buster was preceded in death by his adored wife Gertrude, younger siblings Robert and Elsie, and parents Wanda and Charles. He is survived by his loving daughters, nieces, nephew, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great and grand-nieces and their spouses.
Buster, Congratulations on a lavish life!
Que recuerdos que arte digno de admiración 😘
Today I visited the Lotus Festival and have witnessed a real disaster happened to the local animals.
They were shocked of the extreme quantity of visitors and didn't have a place to hide from the crowd. The gooses started to fly away when it was getting dark in the park and the crowd was still growing and became louder. When birds was trying to leave their home park in the dark some of them began to stuck and beat in the electric wires, a lot of guests witnessed the electric short curcuits at the Bellevue Street and Echo Park ave. Then they fall on the road and died, some of them have repulsed from the pack and running on the 101 freeway entrance and the roadway.
We saw that this event was supported by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. And I have a big question if it's proper place for festivals which despise local wildlife?
I talked to event stuff and to the information desk about dead birds. But in two hours the birds was still falling and lying on the street (another one was dying on the Echo Park street). And I cant even imagine what was happen when the visitors start to put the paper lights with the fire inside on the water (Lights of Dreams Water Lantern Event)
I had such so much fun at our local park community event!! Thank you so much!!
