LAUSD Local District East

LAUSD Local District East The official page of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Local District East.

Second largest in the nation, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) enrolls more than 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, at over 900 schools, and 187 public charter schools. The boundaries spread over 720 square miles and include the mega-city of Los Angeles as well as all or parts of 31 smaller municipalities plus several unincorporated sections of Southern California. All youth achieving, the mission of LAUSD, is reflected in continued double-digit growth on the state Academic Performance Index (API); the upward trend in the graduation rate, progress in the pass rate on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and other academic indicators. LA schools boast more winners of the United States Academic Decathlon championships-12-than any other District in this country. Add to those impressive victories, outstanding individual student and team achievements in: science, mathematics, social studies, language arts, foreign and dual languages, business and entrepreneurial skills, the visual and performing arts, and athletics. Nationally recognized by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine for serving healthy, low fat and vegetarian school lunches, LAUSD's standards also call for: whole grains, low sodium, locally grown fruits and vegetables and no trans fat; flavored milk or carbonated beverages. Founded in 1853, the District, today, counts more than 115 new schools and campuses, thanks to the nation's largest public works project, funded by bond measures, a testament to broad voter support.

An LD East student and father won the 2019 AI World Championship Technology Award, on Saturday night!

Noah De La Paz and his father Jose De La Paz won for their "outstanding use of technology and demonstrating a strong understanding of AI (artificial intelligence) and its applications for the AI Family Challenge". Their invention is called Shoo.

For generations, children everywhere have dealt with the nuisance of dogs defecating in their yards and needing to clean it up. Meet shoo, a dog deterrent device built with AI technology.
Shoo uses a live camera to collect images and pass them through an image recognition algorithm to determine if a dog is in a specified area. If an animal is present, the device emits a high pitch sound that deters it from staying. The prototype uses Raspberry Pi and the algorithm is written via Scratch X.

Noah is a middle school student at International Studies Learning Center and was coached by the amazing ISLC teacher, Ms. Shelia Buttle. Big thanks to Principal Manzo for his support and to Judy Ahumada and the Curiosity Machine/Iridescent Team who made all of this happen.

One of the attached pictures features Noah De La Paz and his father Jose De La Paz, the other picture features ISLC Teacher Shelia Buttle, Tara Chklovski (Iridescent’s CEO), Jeff Dean (Google Senior Fellow and Senior VP for Google AI) with Noah and his father Jose.

Today Middleton ES held its first ever Attendance Matters Day. Middleton School staff and LAUSD SHHS staff visited the homes of over 35 students with excessive absences. Families were provided with resources and information about the importance of regular school attendance.

Ms. Elizabeth Valjalo, Principal and Ms. Monica Blanchard, Pupil Services and Attendance counselor did an amazing job in coordinating this event.
It was truly a success!
