The California Department of Justice has reached a settlement with Sprint and T-Mobile over its proposed merger that protects low income consumers, expands access to underserved communities, and creates jobs in California.

We took these telecom giants to trial over their merger to protect Californian’s interests.

We’re always going to take on these fights and we will not sit by when competition and fairness are on the line.

Three individuals have been charged for allegedly operating a prostitution scheme in North Hollywood. The defendants have been charged with multiple felony counts of pimping and pandering.

Exploiting young women takes a cold, hollow heart. As a result of the #MeToo movement, more and more women are courageously stepping forward and shining light on abuses perpetrated by people in positions of power. We at the California Department of Justice welcome their voices and stand ready to hold those involved in criminal activity accountable.

Today Assemblymember Mark Stone and I introduced AB 2570 to fight tax fraud and recover crucial funding for our communities. California loses billions of dollars each year to false claims against the government.

That’s funding that could go towards fixing roads, protecting public safety, helping our students, and so much more.

AB 2570 strengthens the California False Claims Act, making it easier for the California Department of Justice and local prosecutors to investigate fraudulent claims and recover public funds lost to misrepresentation.

When big corporations cheat our government, hard-working California families are left holding the bag. We need to be able to fight back.

Attorney General Becerra: EPA’s Proposed Standards for Lead in Drinking Water Fails the Test Americans Expect

10 Attorneys General are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen its proposed standards for controlling and remediating lead in drinking water.

There is no room for backsliding on the standards protecting our families from the well-documented dangers of lead.

We don’t have decades to wait before we fix the problem of lead in our drinking water – we owe it to our children to employ stringent standards now.

02/10/2020

In response to allegations that Los Angeles Police Department records used to identify possible gang members in the “CalGang” database were falsified, the California Department of Justice is launching an independent review of LAPD’s CalGang policies and record entries.

CalGang is an important system for sharing law enforcement intelligence regarding criminal street gangs and helping law enforcement agencies investigate crimes. False or inaccurate data cripples a system wholly reliant on the integrity of such data. It undermines the hard work of legitimate intelligence gathering accomplished by fellow officers.

We must take immediate action to ensure the integrity of the database.

Transparency and accountability are fundamental to effective policing. https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-announces-independent-review-los-angeles-police

Attorney General Becerra Secures nearly $344 Million Judgment Against Johnson & Johnson for Endangering Patients through Deceptive Marketing of Pelvic Mesh Products

We’ve secured a nearly $344 million judgement against Johnson & Johnson for false and deceptive marketing of its pelvic mesh products.

Johnson & Johnson intentionally concealed the risk of its pelvic mesh implant devices, robbing women and their doctors of the ability to make an informed decision about whether to permanently implant the products in patients’ bodies.

Today we achieved justice for the women and their families forever scarred by this dishonesty. https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-secures-nearly-344-million-judgment-against-johnson

As the result of a collaboration between the California Department of Justice and local law enforcement, an arrest has been made in a Yolo County cold case involving the death of multiple infants.

There is absolutely no place in our society for the kind of horrendous crimes against children like those alleged today.

We’re thankful for the hard work of our DNA and missing persons teams and local investigators who fight every day to keep our communities safe. At the California Department of Justice, we will do everything in our power to track down criminals who think they have evaded the grip of justice.

Though our continued work with the California Highway Patrol Special Operations Unit and the Riverside Police Department Gang Unit, we’re announcing the arrest of 15 individuals and the seizure of 14 firearms and illegal drugs including methamphetamine and cocaine, as part of a takedown of gang members in Riverside, California.

The California Department of Justice will continue to zero in on dangerous street gangs that target, terrorize, and harass our communities. On January 1, the California Consumer Privacy ACT (CCPA) went into effect. The CCPA is a first-in-nation data privacy law that puts power back in the hands of California consumers, not the companies that use their data.

I encourage all Californians to take a moment to understand their new rights and exercise these rights to take control of their personal data.

Knowledge is power, and in today’s age knowledge is derived from data. When it comes to your data, you should be in control. https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-issues-advisory-outlining-new-data-privacy-rights

12/20/2019

Today we unveiled the terms of our settlement with Sutter Health, Northern California’s largest healthcare system, for alleged anticompetitive business practices that raised the cost of care for Californians.

These practices meant that the average cost of an inpatient hospital procedure in Northern California was nearly double the price in Southern California—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

When one healthcare provider can dominate the market, those who shoulder the cost of care — patients, employers, insurers — are the biggest losers. That’s why our settlement includes historic policy changes that restore competition and ensure that there is transparent, competitive pricing in Northern California.

This first-in-the-nation comprehensive settlement should send a clear message to the market: if you’re looking to consolidate for any reason other than efficiency that delivers better quality for a lower price, think again. The California Department of Justice is prepared to protect consumers and competition, especially when it comes to healthcare.https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-state-unions-employers-and-workers-reach-settlement

No state has been left untouched by the opioid epidemic. This is why every Attorney General in the nation is standing together to support the FIGHT Fentanyl Act. Law enforcement must retain the tools they need to keep this deadly substance off the streets.

We’ve secured a $3.1 million settlement with Hawaiian Gardens Casino for misleading gambling regulators and violating the Bank Secrecy Act, a federal law intended to combat money laundering.

Attorney General Becerra Secures $23 Million in Settlements With Auto Parts Manufacturers for Violations of Antitrust Law

We’ve secured more than $23 million in settlements with 52 auto parts manufacturers for colluding to suppress and eliminate competition by fixing prices for parts sold to automobile manufacturers.

This bid-rigging scheme has driven up costs for consumers for decades.

A car is one of the most important and expensive purchases someone will make in their lifetime. For many people, their car is what allows them to go to work, get an education, and travel to visit loved ones. That’s why it’s crucial that the market remain fair and competitive.

And when it isn’t, we take action. Today’s announcement is the culmination of years of work by our office to hold these auto parts companies accountable.

As part of a joint effort between our Special Operations Unit, the Stockton Police Department Gang Violence Suppression Unit, and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office we’re announcing the arrest of 50 individuals and the seizure of drugs and firearms in connection to the Norteno criminal street gang in Stockton.

The alleged criminal activities include attempted murder, robbery, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, possession and sale of firearms and more.

At the California Department of Justice, protecting public safety in our communities is top priority.

These arrests are proof of the results our law enforcement teams can deliver when we join forces to put criminals behind bars.

We’re suing JUUL for enabling a devastating public health crisis.

While claiming to help adults wean off tobacco, JUUL targeted teens in its advertising, failed to give required warnings about the product’s chemical exposure and health risks, and illegally failed to verify the age and identity of its online California purchasers.

We’ve worked too hard, committed our hard-earned money for too long combatting harmful tobacco use to stand idly by as we now lose Californians to vaping and nicotine addiction. https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-and-los-angeles-leaders-announce-lawsuit-against-juul

Today, we stood up for American values, the rule of law, and America’s Dreamers.

You learn from a very early age that there is a right way and there is a wrong way to do things. The federal government tried to terminate DACA the wrong way. Today, we stand here very proud of the arguments that were made on behalf of the 700,000 DACA recipients. We’re here to stand up for the right way to do things.

Together, we’re here to say DACA is legal and an American success story.

Attorney General Becerra Petitions Court to Compel Facebook to Comply with Outstanding Investigative Subpoena Issued by California

We’re taking legal action involving Facebook over its failure to comply with subpoenas lawfully issued during our investigation into the company’s business practices.

Over the past 18 months, we’ve sent Facebook several subpoenas and interrogatories to determine whether Facebook violated the law as part of our investigation into the company’s practices related to privacy, disclosures, and third-party access to user data. The responses we have received to date are patently inadequate.

We’re left with little choice but to involve the courts. Our work must go on.

Pleased to announce the result of our Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) Team’s work in the field this year. Our CAMP team is the nation’s largest illegal marijuana eradication program, with local, state, and federal agencies working tirelessly to bring those who poison our waters, damage our public lands, weaponize the illegal cannabis black market, and endanger our communities to justice.

The California Department of Justice is extremely proud of our partnership with federal, state, and local agencies and we look forward to continuing this necessary work. https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-announces-148-arrests-part-statewide-cannabis
